• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

No, I'm not teaching ESL currently, though I am thinking as soon as I get caught up on some work I'd like to volunteer at an elementary school with the ESL classroom to help some of the students understand their classwork or just to give them a break with being forced to only use English. I am of the belief that the first language should be used to teach the second.

Are you aware of any churches around here that are highly involved with Hispanic outreaches? Ones that actually are making a difference are hard to find. There are two UMC churches in Chattanooga, where I was, that are having great success in reaching the Hispanic community. I'd love to find something similar here. They found the key was to reach the children in the schools first, and the parents will get involved through the kids.

Westvleteren,

I'm right off of PIB at the intersection with Suwanee Dam. I just got lost in Duluth a couple days ago trying to find McAlisters off of exit 109.
I spent my first couple of years in Duluth getting lost. All the roads look alike to me. ("Is that the same strip mall with dry cleaners and nail salon I just saw or is it a different one?")

If you go to Harry's Farmer's Market or any other store with an international presence, there's a free Spanish-language newspaper called "Mundo Hispanico" that you can pick up--usually wherever there are apartment guides and other free publications. I haven't read it in a while, but there used to be a community section where you could find a listing of ESL programs, both paid courses and church- or community-sponsored ones. The listing won't be limited to Gwinnett, but it might be a place to start.
