  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Okay, basically, I've written a short story that I'm hoping to try and publish, only I'm not sure what genre it would be. The basic story idea is someone's been looking for the fountain of youth for a long time, and finally he's discovered where it is. So he takes his wife and they go after it, and the ending shows them finding it, and then what happens right after. The events allow for a good deal of character development along the way, too, and it's set in the modern 'real world' (though it does have that 'what if' aspect to it). That's a really bad summary, but I think it gets enough across for my question. So the question is, what genre would you say it is? I'm trying to decide between speculative fiction and literary fiction right now, though I suppose it's possible too that it's something else entirely. Like, do you think someplace that only publishes non-genre/literary (whatever it's called exactly) would accept it, or would it be more likely to show up in a sci-fi/fantasy publication?

Literary magazines do publish stories with speculative elements; likewise, some of the SF/Fantasy magazines publish literary stories with only the barest veneer of a speculative element.

I'd try any literary magazines that don't say outright, "Don't send us fantasy," and The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction.
