I was looking through the CBD catalogue, and noticed they have the Geneva Bible on sale for only $39.99. This is a 1560 landmark edition (whatever that means?), extensive commentary in margins, woodcuts illustrating biblical scenes.

I'm wondering if anyone has experience reading this particular version of the Bible, and what comments you would have regarding any problems, inaccuracies, etc.

I don't want to waste my money on a Bible that I will not want to read! Please share your comments. Thanks.

IIRC the Geneva is available on e-sword, and you can make your own judgement.

The Geneva Bible is the Bible of the Pilgrims used by the Puritans. It was the first Bible brought to America. It was quoted by Shakespeare. It reads 90% the same as the King James.

It is a great Bible to have. I like to read the Revised Standard version as my main Bible, however I check difficult passages against the Douay Rheims, King James, and the New American. I do not own a copy of the Geneva, but I have looked up passages on-line for research.

Amazing... :)

and so far only John 3:16 has loaded ....
That's surely because you clicked the I information symbol. The arrow next to it is the download, and it works perfectly.

You might be interested in the history of the progression of the english translations. First there was a tyndales, also a 'great' bible which was often chained to the pulpits and very, very expensive so that the average household could not afford it; then there was the Geneva and Bishops Bible. The Geneva contained the notes of the Calvinistic reformation and included an interpretation against authoritarian rule. The 'bishops bible' portrayed the structured church and the leadership as authoritative (similar to catholic hierarchy, but not to the same extreme). The leaders of the anglican church lobbied king james for a remedy. The king james had critereon that could not be gone against by the translators. One was that there would be no marginal notes, and another was that it would favor the old use of the word 'church' as opposed to 'assembly' in certain passages.

The KJV took the place of he Bishops bible, but the Geneva was so popular at the time that it took a ban on it being published in England AND a huge tariff on it's purchase if it was imported to cease it's common use.

The Geneva Bible download at e-sword is only for Windows ... I have an iBook. Does anyone know of Geneva Bible downloads for Mac? Thanks.

I have two copies of the hardcover edition of this 1560 Geneva Bible. It contains the old spelling, as well as the thou's and thee's. The marginal notes are too small so I don't even attempt to read them. There are symbols/abbreviations in the text, but I have already figured out the meanings of two or three of these. The paper quality is excellent.

At first, I thought it was an okay purchase for me, but now I think it's a great purchase.

Last night I orderd a copy of the 1560 Geneva Bible. Should be arriving in two weeks ... I'm looking forward to reading the margianal notes ... I read all of the reviews, and several people said the margin notes are readable without a magnifying glass ... I will probably need one though ....
