• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

It's genetic in my family as well. It's not always a genetic thing, but it often can be. And hanging out with people who feel the same way is natural- they understand. It may not always be helpful to be around those constantly depressed if you bring each other down, but it can also be a reallyu good thing if you build each other up. Depression is such a lonely thing, feeling like no one understands, so having someone who does, that's a cool thing.

Were there events that triggered your depression or your family's depression?

My whole family (even our DOG!) got depressed during some rough times.

I think your genetics can make you more likely to get depressed as a response to something that happens in your life.

alcoholism. I believe that caused alot of death, job loss, stuff like this is part of my family life. My grandfather is 100% Cherokee. I do think it started with him but a few medical people I have sat down with say genetic is a 'scape goat" for our own metabolic decrease. To that I say-Bull. :( Or maybe,I am just that confused by dr's and their opinions. Thanks you two. I'm sure it is genetic.

Chemical embalances are definitley genetic. Not all family members are suseptible to this, although I find it is usually most likely the case. Depression however can be caused by several things such as childhood trama, post tramatic, and other life altering stresses. I find if it becomes unbearable the best thing to do is seek help. God placed fellowship before us for a purpose. If we could do it alone we would be that way. Finding help can often keep some from things such as suicide which can often be the tragic end of many who suffer from depression. One of the most common things heard by most Therapist when dealing with depression is a loss of Faith. It is not uncommon to feel alone and therefore look to your creator for answers. Have hope and faith that God will get you through these tough times in life. Stress is unfortunately a factor in life that you sometimes can't get away from, but thankfully God is there to help you through those times!
