  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Actually, I was looking for the John Huston film on Genesis, but couldnt find it locally or on Youtube. I had a record of that soundtrack as a young kid. I remember the angry booming voice of God expelling Adam and Eve from paradise. I wanted to play it for my kids in Sunday school. After that, we are going to give the kids a chance to stage manage Genesis three as a play. What is God going to sound like?

With no Huston film, I found some art along the same lines.

While I dont wish to exclude the anger of God, I do think it is essential to note a couple of things:

1. Adam and Eve hide from God. That is the most salient activity associated with separation. It is not the only factor. But, in the traditional renderings, there is less hiding and more expulsion.

2. The curses could theoretically be more a question of natural consequences that arbitrary punishment. Man apparently intends to make a go of it for himself as provider, with his new found knowledge of good and evil. Apparently he is not a very good farmer. Again, the issue is not an Allah-like arbitrary wall of division, but a question of, "Where is your heart Adam? Is it with Me and within My Providence, or are you going it alone?" I think a very good model of Christian life is the tendency to leave blessings on the table.

[Ah, Michelangelo, Dude, this was post fig leaves and post God making clothing from skins. Why the anatomy thing?]

Gen 3:24 So he drove out 01644 the man 0120; and he placed 07931 at the east 06924 of the garden 01588 of Eden 05731 Cherubims 03742, and a flaming 03858 sword 02719 which turned every way 02015 , to keep 08104 the way 01870 of the tree 06086 of life 02416.

As for this "drove out" thing, there is another thread on the presence of God, which is very important on this point. There are two aspects of the presence of God. Biblically, the same fiery-bright cloud of the appearing of God either consumes the enemies of God, kills the ignorant, receives his chosen (Enoch, Elijah, the bride) or is accompany by admonishes not to fear.

Luk 2:9 And behold,[fn2] an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid.
Luk 2:10 Then the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.

What do you think? Has anyone gotten it right? Arguably the fig leaf is the first religion, and not a very good one at that. The above is also not so hot.

Not sure what the point is, but when I visited the Getty I was saddened by how unbiblical the religious art was. John writing his books as a young man, rather than as an old man and so forth. I guess they do not call it the dark ages for nothing.

See later edits above. Yes, I agree.

Lots of unbiblical stuff. Just about as biblical as Sir Mixalot.

The problem is, everybody knows about the fig leaves, but if you try painting animal skins Adam and Eve would just look like Fred and Wilma.

hehe.

Well, Wilma was a hotty in a Tiger skin. However, she was decidely non-Rubenesque.

It is more serious in religious art, of course, but I have noticed the same thing in very, very many books. When you read the text you see numerous differences between the descriptions and the included pictures. A typical one I remember at the moment is a Grace Livingston Hill book in which the cover illustration showed the girl with the wrong hair color.
