The Hebrew reveals two different things were going on.
In Genesis 1:27, God "created."
The Hebrew word is
"bara." This word when used in association with God, means to
create something out from nothing.
In Genesis 2?
Bara, is not used! The Hebrew word is
"yatsar," which means
to mold and form something
from existing materials.
What was created in God's image was not a body. God has no hands and eyes, etc. God is invisible. So, what was created "out from nothing" was the invisible human soul. Male and female souls.
In Genesis 2? We see the bringing about a body for the soul to live in. That is why the body was
lifeless until God breathed into the nostrils the soul he had already created!
Without seeing the Hebrew we can not see what was going on. Matter of fact, it states that God rested from creating (bara), after Genesis 1 was completed. In Genesis 2, we no longer see God
creating out from nothing (bara).
Genesis 2:2-3 niv
"By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating (bara) that he had done."
No more "bara." God rested from
creating "out from nothing."
Yet, God now worked with what he had already created, by molding and forming (yatsar) a body from the elements of the earth to be a house for the soul he had already "bara'd" in Genesis 1:27!
Hope that helps clarify!
