I just wanted to share this audiobook, Genesis for normal people. It takes an interesting look at Genesis, the side of scripture that many in the church seem hesitant to talk about. But I did find it interesting none the less!

There are at least 10 parts/videos on the host channel. Here is part 1:

'Any book about the American Revolution or the Cuban missile crisis is just as much a story as Moby Dick, Game of Thrones or Modern Family'

Err what???????? o_O

Talk about a deceptive and intellectually dishonest opening statement: 'Any book ...'?

'Stories' are sought out purely for entertainment purposes, no?
How does such a purpose result in equivalency between a book about the American Revolution and about Moby Dick?
In order to be entertained, the reader has to be prepared to suspend disbelief.
Does one have to suspend disbelief about the real events implied by the term/title: 'The Cuban Missile Crisis' or in the contents of such a book, in order to find entertainment in such a book? If so, the reader's purpose is surely thwarted before even opening it(?)

Well I don't know, does a story have to be fiction to be called a story? Or can a story be non fiction too?

I'd wonder what you might think of some of the other things being said.

I didn't say anything about fiction or non fiction.
The more useful distinction I gave there, was seeking 'entertainment', (which then defines a story), where I think(?) our sense of experiencing entertainment, is unlocked whenever we (deliberately) suspend disbelief(?)

The question then is: Why are they encouraging us to suspend our disbelief when approaching the Genesis topic?

I think I've seen enough of it already.

Oh ok.

Well, the book takes more of a "progressive" kind of approach to scripture. Ie, things like pointing out that the raqia was a dome, or that Cain didn't marry his sister. It looks more at the historical context in which Genesis was written I'd say.

It holds relation to the evolution and creation theme by taking a different approach to the topic of creation, different than the standard 6-day creation perspective.

Sorry, I don't understand what you mean.

I think what he's saying is that, non fiction stories are justifiably called stories despite containing some factual information. And that, the word "story" doesn't necessarily imply that the story is something fictional.

Who is it that decides something is a story? Surely its the reader? I mean I don't go to a bookstore and look for a book that the author has labelled a story. That's up to me to decide after I've read what the author has to say.

The same goes for factual information, fiction and non-fiction. Its up to the reader to decide how to classify what they've read .. or more like its the perspective the reader applies when they're reading the book, leads to whether they conclude it as being a story, or not. One such reader persepctive there, is suspension of disbelief.

That's definitely a step in the right direction.

"Genesis for Normal People".
As an individual who was forced to take psychological tests back in the days when it was allowed to evaluate job applicants and failing because I was an outlier, I take objection at the exclusion of Genesis for us abnormal people.:)

Question:

In inkblot tests, how are psychiatrists trained to score people who consistently see Christian symbols?

Answer: "abnormal"

The guidelines reveal the test's religious bias. If a person sees religious symbols, those responses will generally be scored as abnormal. The Rorschach Interpretation: Advanced Technique authors say:

Religion contents are virtually never present
in the records of normals. Their occurrence is
associated with profound concern about the
problems of good and evil, concern which,
almost always, is a screen for and displacement
of guilt induced by sexual preoccupation.

People need to grow a sense of humour. We had a person in our church who didn't like jokes in the church bulletin because he said, "The work of God is so serious, we shouldn't take it lightly". My view is that life is so serious that we shouldn't take it seriously."
