  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

GAS WAR - an idea that WILL work
This was originally sent by a retired Coca Cola executive. It came from one of his engineering buddies who retired from Halliburton. It's worth your consideration.

Join the resistance!!!! I hear we are going to hit close to $4.00 a gallon by next summer and it might go higher!! Want gasoline pricesto come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action. Phillip Holsworth offered this good idea.

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas. It was more of a inconvenience to us than it was a prioblem for them.

BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read on and join with us! By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $1.50 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $2.79 for regular unleaded in my town. Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50 - $1.75, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the
marketplace..... not sellers. With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And, we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war.

Here's the idea:

For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit.

But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do! Now, don't wimp out at this point.... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people.

I am sending this note to 30 people. If each of us sends it to at least ten more (30 x 10 =3D 300) ... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 =3D 3,000)...and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth group of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers. If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE
>>>>HUNDRED MILLION >>>>PEOPLE!!!

Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all. (If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do is send this to 10 people.... Well, let's face it, you just aren't a mathematician. But I am, so trust me on this one.)

How long would all that take? If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!!

I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you?

Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. I suggest that we not buy from EXXON/MOBIL UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $1.30 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN.

THIS CAN REALLY WORK.

A few thoughts:

1. The other oil companies do not have the capacity to meet demand. So you will have to go back to Exxon/Mobil within a few days at best.

2. The other oil companies would raise their prices exorbitantly during the campaign.

3. The big oil companies only make about 8% profit. Much the same as the rest of industry. They aren't charging too much. The problem is their costs are too high.

4. Don't blame Big Oil for a lack of cheap supplies of petroleum. Blame God. He didn't put enough in the ground.

Why did gas prices go up after the war? Why can they change so drastically in a short amount of time.

This is signs of a monopoly. They can change prices on a whim. Until we produce our own oil, we can't affect gas prices. WHen they have a monoply, they can charge what ever they want.
Should We mention that 8% profit has pushed these big companies to the top money making company?

It's not a matter of shortage of oil, it's shortage of competition.

Who has a monopoly? There are many gas and oil companies...

The war only had a partial affect on gas prices. The real issue is the explosion of demand that has been going on since the mid '90's in the USA & China. In the USA because of all the goodies we've been buying: SUV's, big houses, computers & electronics. In China because of explosive economic expansion.

Demand has reached the point of the Middle Easts ability/willingness to supply. Which is why prices are so volatile. Today, small disruptions in supply have a major impact on prices because of the lack of supply capacity.

And the U.S. simply does not have the ability to produce enough cheap fuel to meet demand with current technology. Nowhere even close. You can punch holes everywhere we have territory and you aren't going to get enough oil. You can do a lot of expensive stuff: melt tar, liquify coal, all that jazz. But that doesn't help prices.

Though I completely agree with you on the competition issue. The last 2 administrations have allowed what used to be a lot of oil companies consolidate into just 4 majors. And that is not enough to maintain a healthy competitive environment. Same thing happened to the auto industry and look what happened.

We have a free market, just not a competitive one. And that is the only thing worse than socialism.

Prices will continue to rise. Eventually the pain will be enough that we will hopefully elect people who will take leadership on the issue and force us to use alternative fuels. But most likely, they will just rise until it seriously crimps the economy, then we will have a recession deep enough to seriously impact demand and prices will fall. Albeit at a tremendous cost in jobs and lifestyles.

A lot of the problem with the high price of oil and of gasoline is the result of speculators driving up the price on the NYMEX. 25-30 years ago before there was a NYMEX contract for crude oil the only people competing for oil were basically the companies that bought it to refine it. Now every Tom, Dick, Harry, and Jane can drive the price up on the NYMEX. Now there's even an exchange traded fund(ETF) for the small investor to join the speculation and drive the price of oil up even further.
