The lot, next to a historic church, is an awesome sight from the air. Just not on the ground.
A block or so from one of Galveston’s most magnificent buildings, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, sits a curious lot where a brick path has been laid in the shape of a rosary, the string of prayer beads essential to Catholicism and a number of other faiths.
The path is probably not big enough to be visible from space, but certainly enough to cause a stir on social media. A birds-eye photo of the lot and surrounding blocks taken from Google Earth went viral after being posted last Sunday to the Completely Galveston public Facebook group. The collective reaction was one of surprise and delight, with even lifelong islanders admitting they had never noticed it before.
On the ground, though, a different picture emerges. The lot is unkempt, but not overgrown. A four-foot white wooden fence surrounds it, but the gate is missing. Chunks are missing from the short stone walls ringing the fence. Most disconcertingly, a small white statue of the Virgin Mary in the center of the rosary path has been toppled over.
