  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was wondering, does anyone know a good way to gain weight? I am really thin (100lbs.) and I have a fast metabolism, so it's hard for me to gain weight. My younger sister even weighs more than me and she teases me like saying I'm anorexic and that I through up my food. Does anyone have some advice?

Just eat. Lots of food. And watch out for cardio, it you are old enough, not sure your age, start working out. See a PT for some help with a program.

And tell your sister to stop making fun of anorexicia. It is not funny.

Eat plenty of protein and carbohydrates. Some light weighlifting will help you put on muscle instead of the fat. The protein will help build muscles, and the (complex) carbs will give you more energy to burn so you don't lose more weight. Get plenty of calcium to keep your bones strong.
It's going to take some concentrated effort. You need to work on eating more so you can stretch your stomache a little. (so you can take in more in a sitting) It doesn't happen overnight. You may not see results for 4-6 weeks... at least.

Assuming you want to get fat without actually eating more, you should eat a lot of fatty foods, and especially foods with a lot of sugar.

- chocolate candy bars
- ham
- white bread
- drink chocolate drinks
- eat lots of cheese
All of the above are nightmare for those people who want to lose weight. hehe

Hey BD, I have the same problem as you. I consume more junk food than should be permitted by law (I actually ate over half of a large pizza last night  ), but I'm still underweight. I know how frustrating and embarrassing it can be when people make comments about your weight. Like others have said, the healthiest way to gain weight is just to eat more nutritious foods, and to exercise regularly to build muscle mass.

I've been trying to gain some weight for months now, and I'm still a good 15 lbs underweight (based on my height). How tall are you? How much weight do you think you need to gain?

Go with what Holly and Jeff said... not what Anti-Fear suggested, lol. In an ideal situation eating whole, nutrient packed foods is the way to go. But, having a low BMI/ectomorph (like myself), supplement and protein drinks are a lot easier way to increase your caloric intake per day as they are fluids which pass through your digestive system a whole lot easier and faster. You can buy these "shakes" pre-made, as pre-mixed powders, or the cheapest way... to make your own as there are tonnes of recipies out there if you look around.

I wish I had your problem, Doll! :)

Definitely work on increasing overall body muscle and NOT fat - even if you are underweight, putting on the pudge won't be healthy for you. My husband is a bit underweight and has got to eat more starches to bring his up, especially now that he's working out more. If you like pasta, go for it girl!!

So I can still exercise? What exercises should I do? Well, that's good :). I love pasta, so I have no problem there.

I'm about 5' 3" or 5' 4". I think I need to gain a good 10-15lbs. When I was in 9th grade I weighed 110lbs. and then I went to the hospital last year and my doctor told me I weighed 105lbs. and now I've lost a little more.

Very true.
this is from my nutrition/wellness text: ( I edited a bit)

Weight gain - Winning at weight gain involves a simple formula that comes down to complementing a balanced eating plan with regular physical activity. It involves the same factors that work with any health lifstyle approach.
Be patient, eat healthful foods and continue to develop positive, lifelong eating habits. An underweight person CANNOT afford to eat desserts, fast foods and high in sat. fat diet. Whether a person is under or over weight their arteries, hearts, digestive systems are the same. To say that a person can 'afford' to is wrong and negligent.

To gain a pound of body weight/week you theoretically need to consume an extra 500 calories over and above your regular intake each day. (one lb. is equal to 3500 calories).

Snacks are a good way to gain weight. A substantial afternoon/evening snack. Some great snack ideas:
fruit, yogurt, cheese and whole grain crackers, trail mix, muffins, granola bars, avacado, bananas, healthy shakes full of low fat milk and fruit.

Space out your snacks in between your larger meals.

I also did your BMI for you and it is 19.08 - only slightly underweight.
I also referred to The Metropolotan Tables of Height and Weight, keeping in mind that this table is only a vague referance to real body weight and types, and again, just slightly underweight.
If you are a hard gainer/ectomorph, then you are genetically predisposed to being underweight. Without seeing you I would guess that you are long boned and small framed. I bet that you can take your middle finger and thumb and wrap them around your wrist and they will over lap. I would even guess that you sun burn easy, and that you have a hard time relaxing. Let me know how accurate I am here. This post is getting way too long, God Bless, J
And yes, do work out, do cardio, lift weights, live a healthy lifestyle.

Howdy I have tried everything and I still don't lose any weight! I have even tried not eating for two weeks before and you know what, I still gained weight, now to me this doesnt' make any sense I don't get how not eating anything makes you still gain weight. How on earth is this possible???
