I'm curious though...at what age was Confirmation/First Communion among the early Lutherans? Would it be as late (13 or 14 years) as is common today?
At the time of the Reformation, it was German law that children age 12 were to be confirmed and communed. In the Roman Church, it was between the ages of 7 and 12. During the age of pietism in the Lutheran Church in the mid-17th century, more emphasis was placed on the prepatory nature of confirmation instruction for reception of the Lord's Supper, thus the age of confirmation/first communion was raised to 14-16 years old.
