I think this might start another controversy (which I take delight in doing, by the way, lol). Seriously, I hope it doesn't, it was just a funny thing to me.
.
At communion on Ash Wednesday, I happened to glance to my right while kneeling. Our rail is a circular shape. Over to the right of me the pastor was communing a woman and her baby. The baby was sucking on a binky hot and heavy. It was just a little funny when the mom reached and popped that thing out, it almost made that POP sound from the suction being released! lol

Remember I go to an ELCA church Rev!

If a child is baptized and the parents want to let him or her partake, the pastor does so. If the child is old enough, the pastor meets with the parents and child to explain what the communion really means before communing the child. The age I am not sure of. If time permits, I will ask him about his opinion on the discernment scripture, just to see the explanation. I can double whammy him about baptisms during Lent at the same time...lol

I told you I liked starting controversial threads...hehehehe.

Probably not that controversial, BabyLutheran. The Lutheran Church of Japan, which the LCMS is in full communion with, practices infant communion.

So you may avoided starting a controversy this time ;-)

Grace and peace,
John
darn, I love a good fight too! lol

how the heck do you commune an infant? Sorry there just seems to be a bit of an issue there

In my church there is some exception for baptized adults who are still going through confirmation, but generally speaking you must be a confirmed member to take communion. Children and infants can be brought up during communion for a blessing but they do not take communion.

Small kids cannot examine themselves, and should therefore not take communion.

Since the Lord's Supper requires understanding of what the sacrament is and the self-examination of the communicant, the "age cut-off" is an age that the individual can make that confession of faith necessary to be in communion with the Church and make that self-examination. Infants cannot do either, thus...

I've never seen the logic behind baptizing children but refusing to commune them. Especially when it's pretty well established that the practice of the early church was to baptize, confirm, and commune all at the same time, and that later confirmation/first communion was a later development.

Indeed, it would seem that the same infant (Baptized of course) which has saving faith and would be welcomed into Heaven if they should die at that moment or a week later or whenever, would have condemnation brought upon them if they received the Body and Blood of Christ. The logic escapes me also.

Does the EO Bible not contain 1 Corinthians? Apparently not.

Well... maybe being a Lutheran is a bad thing.

Hey, Dan!!! Where do I sign up for the EO??? :p

^_^

What I think is interesting is Lutherans could concievably fault the Orthodox both ways with regard to 1 Cor. First of all we commune infants who can't examine themselves and then it is required of those who are able to examine themselves, not only to do that but to also prepare by fasting and additional prayer!
