Did Jesus have a sense of humor? What was the funniest thing he ever said?

We teamed up with Faith Counseling. Can they help you today?

I don't know any exact sayings off the top of my head but I believe Jesus has a strong sense of humor. Where else would we get ours sense we are reflections of God?

What are you talking about? Psalms is entertaining, if you like poetry, and Genesis has nice stories.

My New Testament Survey teacher here at college said that the New Testament (espcially Paul) is full of witty humor that goes right over most modern heads. I'm sure Jesus has some that we just fail to spot

"And Nathanael said to him, 'Can anything good come out of Nazareth?' . . ." (John 1:46, NKJV)

He who blesses his friend with a loud voice early in the morning, it will be reckoned a curse to him.
    (Proverbs 27:14)

Do not eat anything you find already dead. (Deut 14:21)

If only you would be altogether silent! For you, that would be wisdom. (Job 13:5)

"You can tame every animal on earth, but not the tongue," (James 3:8)

"But You, O Lord, shall laugh at them; . . . " (Psalm 59:8, NKJV)

'How do you know me?' said Nathanael.
'I saw you under the fig tree before Philip spoke to you,' said Jesus.
'Teacher, you are the messiah, God's son!'
'You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? I can do a lot better than that, just wait and see!'

A wonderful passage. I believe Jesus said a lot of things with a twinkle in his eye, maybe renaming Simon as 'Peter' -the Rock - was one of them, and some of the parables too.

His Spirit has definitely brought me laughter. One thing from the bible that made me bust up was thinking about Jesus sleeping on the boat while His disciples were freaking out about the storm. Jesus was so chill. He was sleeping! ahahah praise The Lord.

The sleeping in the boat episode cracks me up. Like I said before I believe that Jesus has a very strong sense of humor. There was a Jesus movie once that showed a very human side (but in a good way) of the Messiah such as skipping stones in the sea of Gallilee and slashing his disciples at a well. I like to think that many such episodes actually happened but were simply not recorded.

You might have to read something with just the right inflection in mind. Any time Jesus utters the phrase, "a sinner or a tax collector," I can picture Him winking and elbowing Matthew in the ribs. Because Matthew was a tax collector.

Jesus's naming of Peter always struck me as being a play on words. Peter, translated directly, means something like rock, or rocky. Given Peter's habit of bungling, I suspect Jesus was suggesting (lovingly) that Peter was a bit dense.
Jesus isn't recorded as making jokes, exactly, but I picture him saying a lot of things with a bit of a wink and a smile. Take for example, the woman who he saved from stoning. I picture Jesus suppressing a grin when he looks up and says, "Is there no one left to condemn you?"
When Peter became afraid while walking across the water, I can imagine Jesus chuckling as he chided him. Look through the Gospels, and you'll find plenty of incidents that suggest that Jesus had a dry sense of humor. In fact, I think he could be a bit of a smartalek from time to time. Certainly, the Pharisees would have thought so.

    I've always liked this:

Luke 18:9 ¶ And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:
10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.
11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.
12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.
13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Notice that God seems to cut the Pharisee off after two verses -- as if to say -- "Enough of this, let Me hear what the publican is saying!"
