  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What exactly did God mean when he said that "Friendsip with the world is hatred toward God" in James 4:4. I know some people have said that this is implying that we should not make friendship an idol, but when I read it I dont see the word idol...I see the word aldulterous. What does this scripture truly reveal to us? Lets not just look at this 1 scripture verse, but the verses preceeding and the verses before to see what the context means
Thank you very much

To me

James 4:1 From whence [come] wars and fightings among you? [come they] not hence, [even] of your lusts that war in your members?

James 4:2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.

James 4:3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume [it] upon your lusts.

James 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

James 4:5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?

These are all speaking of "coveting," lusting after what someone else has. Wars are the result of trying to take another county's resources by force,so it also touches on "greed". Where if our focus is on living for God and staying in His will, the opposite would be true. We would be "givers" instead of "takers". Frienship with the world,IMHO means loving the "THINGS" of this world more than God,and desiring them more than desiring to know, and be in God's will for our life.

James 4:3,I think means we often ask for our "wants" instead of our needs. We want to fulfill or gratify the lusts of our flesh.Such as desiring someone
who is already in a relationship with someone else,or desiring a certain material possession.
