  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I never understood Catholics that go out to fine restraunts on Fridays during Lent and spent a lot of money on fish fries. It seems to completly defeat the purpose of giving up meat on Friday. They are giving up one earthly good, only to completly indulge themselves in another.

I hear ya, man....go to a fish fry. Support your parish causes.

You're right. That's not the spirit of fasting, but looking for the loophole.

I'm just wondering...why is fish not considered a meat? My son asked me and I wasn't sure what the answer was.

I think that it had to do with the cost difference between beef/pork and fish. However, I could be wrong.

In trying to explain Lent to my significant other, I was telling her about how I could not eat meat on Ash Wednesday and Friday, and that with the money I saved from not purchasing meat for those days, and skipping fast food on those days as well, I would donate it to the poor.

I was, I admit, also lamenting that I would be stuck eating Ramen Noodles this Friday when she suggested that on Friday night, we go out and have shrimp (since it's fish). I thanked her for the sentiment (heck, she even offered to pay), but I explained to her that it would be defeating the purpose IMO, of abstaining from meat in the first place... which was, to me, to save money and give alms to the poor.

:) They just have lost sight of the point. I have done it, too. Not go out to fancy restaurants (can't afford it ;) ), but forget the humbleness that should accompany our Friday fast. I used to, on Fridays during Lent, prepare a very nice savory meal. Not a large one, but like grilled salmon with a nice vegetable and wild rice or something like that. I always use a lot of flavor and spices when I cook, and I figured that if I wasn't going to eat but one meal it should at least taste good. Anyway, I had posted something to that effect here a while back, and someone made a comment that really put it in perspective for me. They said that, even though it might not taste as good, isn't a humble meal of fish sticks more in keeping with the spirit of Lent, than a meal of honey bourbon pecan glazed grilled salmon no matter how small the portion? I really took it to heart, not in a bad way, but just that it truly did make sense to me and make me think. Not just a technical fast, not just giving up red meat, but making a true sacrifice, a truly humble offering. It's a challenge, for sure.

Peace be with you!

Sandy

Ya know, I was thinking about this just this morning.

I do most of the cooking at my house and meatless meal just sort of, became a challenge some years ago. What can I make that has no meat ?

It started with grilled salmon. Then beer cheese/brocolli soup. Then a really killer vegaterian salad. Its gotten to the point where we eat better on Fridays during lent because I don't have ground beef dish to fall back on.

I noticed that I have a recipe file just for stuff I only make during lent on Fridays.

Ramen noodles should run a television ad during Lent that says "Its great for fasting Catholics!" they would sell millions more :p lol Ramen noodles are very good btw :)

You're a little young but the last ad aimed at Catholics during lent was a McDonald's ad for fillet o fish that feature two nuns.

Everytime it came the TV I would hurl curses at Ray Kroc's soul. (He had died some years before)

It was that insulting.

Just a slightly off topic question here. Why do Catholics abstain from meat and eat fish instead on Fridays? Does this only happen during Lent or does it happen all the time? I hope I didn't hijack your thread! If I did, feel free to have a mod delete my post or make it into a new thread or something. I'm just trying to learn. :holy:
