  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I think that you consider any animal with a hoof as meat. Not sure but I read that somewhere.

I'm eating shrimp tonight, but I'm going to the Stations of the Cross this afternoon. Don't you just love the Catholic Church. We have something going on all of the time, but I find that keeps me focused on GOD.

In Christ Name, GlynnW

I don't really eat that much meat anyway, maybe twice a week, so abstaining from eating meat is not much of a sacrifice for me.
Plus, since I have a bunch of fishermen in the family, there is a at least 100 lbs of freshly caught fish in my garage freezer.
I am sooo tired of fish.:help:

Have to laugh when reading this thread. Our Friday non-meat meals are simple and on Ash Wednesday, they are not only simple, but something I really don't like. Just last Wednesday, my Hubby who is old enough not to HAVE to fast (but abstains as well as fasts), said "I understand the simple part and the non-meat part, but does it HAVE to be a penance too?"

I work at Chick-Fil-A and they (to my surprise and delight) have a Lenten Special for Catholics, consisting in Tuna Salad Sandwiches and other little treats. :)

I still agree with Davide and DreamTheater, we should remember Lent is a time to do penance, not to find loopholes, so we don't have give up pleasures that we are attached to. We are supposed to "leave behind all worldly cares" in this Lenten season to more enter into the meditation of our Lord's sacred Passion.

After reading St. John Chrysostom, St. Ambrose, and St. Leo the Great's Lenten Homilies (at least some of them) I have come to believe the majority of Catholics have lost the Spirit of Lent. Fasting and abstinence have untold benefits for the soul if we only would take the time (and make the sacrifice) to do them.

<Jumps off soapbox> :)

Just a slightly off topic question here. Why do Catholics abstain from meat and eat fish instead on Fridays? Does this only happen during Lent or does it happen all the time? I hope I didn't hijack your thread! If I did, feel free to have a mod delete my post or make it into a new thread or something. I'm just trying to learn. :holy:

As penance for our sins. Also, as Jimmy Akin's article linked to above said, fish used to be a common food while only the upper classes could afford meat.

The rule is no meat on every Friday of the year. One does not have to eat fish, but no meat may be eaten. The Vatican has given permission for the national bishops' conferences to substitute some other penance instead of abstinence from meat. In the US, the rule is no meat on Fridays during Lent. Outside of Lent, meat may be eaten if some other penance is done.

You're a little young but the last ad aimed at Catholics during lent was a McDonald's ad for fillet o fish that feature two nuns.

I've never seen this ad, but I did notice that last year McDonalds offered 2 Filet-O-Fish sandwiches for $2 during Lent. It's back this year, but gone up to $3.
