  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Philadelphia-area drivers can now fill up their tanks with less-expensive gasoline promoted by President Donald Trump’s administration, but details on the entire enterprise remain scarce.

...A lot remains unclear, including the names of the participating businesses and how they are able to sell gasoline cheaper than nearby competitors.

...A White House spokesperson said the Freedom Fuel Network was a private company and not a government program, adding that the company was not purchasing gasoline at a discount and that the administration has not provided funding. The spokesperson said the business was simply making gas more affordable for drivers in Pennsylvania and New Jersey but did not elaborate.

...Beyond that, not much information was available beyond the White House social media post and a statement made by Trump, who wrote on his Truth Social account last week that a “very smart retailer” located throughout the Northeast was “stepping up” to offer a discount at the pump.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, crunched the numbers and said there was no profitable way for Freedom Fuel stations to sell gas so cheaply.

“Stations selling at this price, it’s not sustainable,” De Haan said. “Generally, when losses happen, somebody’s got to pay for it.”
So, what devils are in the details?

Sure, cheap gas is great for consumers, but selling gas below the cost of gas is what cartels do to get rid of competitors; then, when competition is gone, prices go up. But who knows, this could be on the up and up.

"Freedom Fuel Network" was registered to "Corporation Trust Company", a registered agent that has previously been used by Trump-related entities.

Speculation is they are either selling at a loss to try and pick up other business or getting subsidized from somewhere to make up the difference.

Awww... I was gonna post this with a headline saying Mayor Mamdani was creating socialist gas stations that would undercut private gas stations with lower prices.

The White House is certainly taking credit:

Lure 'em in with underpriced gas and stick it to 'em with overpriced shady kratom, bath salts and stale pizza! Sounds like a plan.

I don't think "freedom fuels" is going to endanger their competition anytime soon.

It's probably a short lived Trump publicity stunt.

Hey, Trump’s recent actions have breathed new life into America’s petroleum industry.
There’s nothing wrong with him getting his cut…is there?

So Trump has turned the Oval Office into an advertisement bureau for gas stations.
I suppose that this is what you guys voted for.

He already made it a platform for advertising beans so why not gas?

I paid $3.25 in South Carolina on vacation last week. Not sure $3.47 is worth boasting about.

What they need to be targeting is $2.47. Get it? Second term, 47th president. At least that would make some sense. Unless the $3.47 is some secret code for Trump's third term? But then, that would need to be $3.48, wouldn't it?

Sounds like you've already answered your own question.

Just my own personal speculation...

It's likely an entity or entities that have the kind of cash reserves that they can afford to take some losses in the short term, in order to make some gains of some sort later.

While I don't think it'd be feasible to suggest that they'd be able to "eliminate competition" with this stunt (BP and Sunoco aren't going out of business anytime soon due to a small network of regional operators), it's certainly plausible that some entities could be willing to lose a little cash in exchange for something that helps them out later.

Or it could just be some ideologically driven rich people who are willing to spend/lose money on bankrolling an endeavor aimed at making their own side look good. That's not completely out of the question either.

There's an expression (that can't be repeated on here due to forum rules), let's just call it having "To heck with you" money.

I've also heard it referred to as "self serving philanthropy".
