Well I personally have not played any online RPG's recently, but my roommate was playing Rose Online and that looked pretty good from what I could tell. Also I came across http://www.onrpg.com/ , which looks like a site for free online RPG's. Hope that helps. :)

Runescape was awesome until they started listening to the whining of the minorities in the game (meaning those few who did whine, not racial). The screwed up quite a bit of the gameplay and most of the good features only members can reap. It is still fun, though I bite a knuckle at the Gowers' meddling...

'nuff rambling, go play.

If you can swing a little up front money to get Neverwinter Nights there are a number of persistent world servers out there that allow you to play it as an mmorpg. I just picked up NWN Gold (NWN and SoU) for $20 and you can get NWN Platinum (NWN with both expansions) for $30.

I'm still working on the original campaign but I plan to venture out soon and start experiencing the real NWN.

Also if you want to swing a little (very little) upfront money and buy Ultima Online (UO) there are a number of "player run shards" that are free and great fun. You can find the older versions (that work fine on player shards) for less than 20 bucks.

It's an older client, but still a lot of fun!

I don't play anymore... But used to be an avid UO'er
