• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hi,

I am a Christian who had OCD. It was taking over my life but God showed me that I needed to put my faith into him and then to ignore the OCD. By doing this I am now free of OCD.

As I am someone who had OCD I recorded my story on youtube in case it is of any help to anyone.

Hi thank you both for your kind words.

rubycakes: I hope you don’t mind I will pray for you, I totally understand that it is so hard to get out of these routines and obsessions, even when God showed me the answer it took me time to have the faith so that I was able to totally get out of OCD.

QUannie: I will pray for you and im sure others will too. I just want to add a little bit more info for you: When I was first praying to God to heal me of my washing of my hands (and other OCD stuff) I kept expecting him with a blink of an eye to take my obsessions away - but this is not the case. I learnt that I also had to also take action and have faith that God would protect me - so when I tried to resist I had this horrible pulling feeling trying to get me to re-wash my hands. Ignoring the feelings were really really hard but believing God would protect me made it possible for me to ignore.

If I did not believe in God then I am for sure I would still have OCD Don’t forget you have God the creator of everything on your side.

God bless,
Angus

Perhaps it is a form of neutralizing but since last nite I have been saying to myself "trust in the Lord and lean not on your own understanding." I had to tell myself this ALOT today since I spent most of the time today at work obsessing. Ugh! Anyway, it helps to remind myself that because it helps me realize that even when I dont understand why it wont go away, I dont HAVE to understand- I just need to lean on God because He knows best and HE is in control. Ahhhh, sometimes easier said than done!

Thanks for your testimony, Angus. I also had the "handwashing compulsion" when I was a little girl, though not nearly as severely as you described. As an adult, the struggles with OCD have kinda morphed into "religious" obsession struggles. I am trying to relate your wisdom and tips for overcoming, however, into the scrupulosity OCD battles. Thanks for sharing your story. It's very uplifting and inspiring. Blessings to you-
