  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

According to Chinese state officials, the quake caused 69,180 known deaths including 68,636 in Sichuan province; 18,498 people are listed as missing, and 374,176 injured, but these figures may further increase as more reports come in.[12][78][needs update] This estimate includes 158 earthquake relief workers who were killed in landslides as they tried to repair roads.[79]...
In terms of school casualties, thousands of school children died due to shoddy construction. In Mianyang City, seven schools collapsed, burying at least 1,700 people. At least 7,000 school buildings throughout the province collapsed. Another 700 students were buried in a school in Hanwang. At least 600 students and staff died at Juyuan Elementary School. Up to 1,300 children and teachers died at Beichuan Middle School.[85] According to Tan Zuoren, 5,600 pupils were dead or missing from the 64 schools Tan investigated in the quake zone. Tan was detained after he published such a casualties number.[86].....

An article in Science suggested that the construction and filling of the Zipingpu Dam may have triggered the earthquake.[197] The chief engineer of the Sichuan Geology and Mineral Bureau said that the sudden shift of a huge quantity of water into the region could have relaxed the tension between the two sides of the fault, allowing them to move apart, and could have increased the direct pressure on it, causing a violent rupture. The effect was "25 times more" than a year's worth of natural stress from tectonic movement. The government had disregarded warnings about so many large-scale dam projects in a seismically active area. Researchers have been denied access to seismological and geological data to examine the cause of the quake further.[198][199][200]

I believe this.

Fracking is wonderful in technology and in science. Earthquake so induced is mostly harmless.

Only if one assumes we need to continue using fossil fuels regardless of the damage it does to our planet.

This is what they teach you in economic geology classes. When it gets harder to find the easy deposits we go for the harder to get stuff. It's a symptom of desperation.

Like Sid Vicious looking through a garbage can for heroin.

It was NOT geologist who interested in developing oil/gas shale. It was CHEMIST.

And this doesn't make fossil fuels any less bad for us.

It is not a bad thing. Historically, it is a very good thing. Be thankful about it. It is next to a miracle.

I am not convinced that using fossil fuel, yes, coal included, is a bad thing. It is something we should continue to do until it is economically unfeasible.

"Historically" being the operant term there. We cannot afford continuing our usage of it.

So when we collapse our economies and our societies because of climate change will it be "economically unfeasible" at that time?

Also, coal is very hard to justify. It's an exceptionally dirty fuel. Which is why it is falling out of favor against natural gas. And I say that with extensive experience in coal and I even like coal. But it's an AWFUL fuel and we need to phase it out as soon as possible.

I disagree. It apparently depends in factors such as size and location.

Fossil fuel is never an excuse for human's errors of using it. Just like a gun is not an excuse for crime. We DO CAN use coal more successfully if we were not that greedy. As a chemist, you know that. And we still CAN correct our mistakes NOW. Chemist can extract oil and gas from shale, why can't they also contain the dust from burning coal?

What is your opnion of the Hoover Dam and the 2008 quake in China?

Sichuan earthquake of 2008
"Several issues emerged in the aftermath of the disaster. One concerned a debate in the scientific community as to whether the large weight of water impounded by a reservoir situated near the epicentre of the quake could have helped trigger the temblor."

The basic reason for the China earthquake is the Himalayan Mt. but not the Three-Gorge reservoir. There is no such mountain in the North America. There is no comparison between the two.

SO much wrong in this thread... so little time. FWIW, my background is math and physics...

Pollution is never a "good thing". Yes, mankind has benefited from our exploitation of natural resources and unfortunately we are economically dependent on fossils much like a heroin addict is addicted to heroin... I think that is a very fitting analogy...

We need to use our technology to chart us a path to cleaner energy while simultaneously taking into account economics. In fact, you can make a very strong argument that it makes more economical sense to move to renewable energy as that results in more jobs being created and more interdependency of our various economies...

As far as fracking causing "harmless earthquakes" Seriously? That is like saying "Well twinkies only cause harmless heart attacks..."

there are plenty of non trivial earthquakes attributed to fracking. I don't have time to google fu some links though, maybe tomorrow if I remember.

Im' not a fan of spin regardless of which side of the isle it comes from.

Both sides try to spin this issue however the left is more correct than the right on this issue...
