The FBI is investigating a vehicle explosion Wednesday at the Rainbow Bridge border crossing between the U.S. and Canada in what sources tell Fox News was an attempted terrorist attack.

Explosives were in the vehicle at the time and two people who were in the car are dead, the sources told Fox News. A border officer was injured.

The vehicle was driving from the U.S. to Canada and were attempting to drive toward the border officer building, the sources said.

Rainbow Bridge connects Niagara Falls, New York with Niagara Falls, Canada.

Vehicle exploded after accelerating at a high rate of speed, sources say

Videos reviewed by authorities of the scene at the Rainbow Bridge show the vehicle entering the bridge and then accelerating at a high rate of speed, according to multiple law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation,

At one point during the acceleration, the vehicle hit a curb and went airborne over a barrier, landing in the secondary search area, where it exploded, they said.

One eyewitness told local news station WGRZ that the car was speeding and swerving as it approached the border from the U.S. side, but shortly after it passed another car, it suddenly went careering toward the U.S. security checkpoint.
“We could hardly see it, it was going that quick,” said Mike Guenther. “He was flying. ... There was a car in front of him, he swerved out, went in front of the car, hit the fence, and went flying up in the air.”
Guenther said there was “a ball of fire, like 30, 40 feet high. I’ve never seen anything like it. It was really incredible.”

Law enforcement officials have conducted a video canvass of the surrounding area in the hours since the incident occurred and found the car appears to have been at a nearby New York casino before the incident. This is one reason officials [but not FOX] are urging caution in labeling the explosion as an attempted terrorist attack, the law enforcement source said.

Authorities are trying to determine whether the car is registered to the driver at the scene, but the condition of the remains has made it difficult for authorities to determine the identity of the driver, multiple sources told CNN.

It has also created a challenge for authorities in assessing if there were one or two people in the car. Law enforcement originally believed there were two individuals in the car, but they are now not certain.

OP article has changed its headline.

Also FTA: "Fox News' Alexis McAdams was told by sources that the explosion was so big and fierce, that authorities first thought it was a terrorist attack."

I can't post her initial reaction due to a humdinger of a Freudian slip.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said the incident happened at 11:27 a.m. when someone driving a car crashed into a median at the border crossing. She added that there's "no sign" that the incident was a terrorist attack, adding that a "local individual" was involved.

accelerating at a high rate of speed
As a grammar pedant, that phrase really makes my teeth itch. "High rate of speed" is redundant, and "accelerating at a high rate of speed" is just wronger than wrong.

Even after being corrected she still chooses to make this political. Just shameless. She’s even worse than Trump at this kind of thing.

Right wing pundits were really quick to pull out some of their biggest hits too, “truck/religion of peace” or the ever present “border crisis” somehow all being responsible for this incident.

Just curious how would you have worded it? I honestly don’t see any problem with the sentence.

Not sure. It could be accelerating from 10 mph at .1m/s/s

"Accelerated to a high rate of speed" would be much preferable.

I once had a friend post a quote on facebook attributed to Biden along with a long rant about how terrible such a thing was to say. I fact-checked him and showed him that Biden had actually said no such thing and that the quote was completely fabricated. His response was, "well, it sounds like something he would say." He then continued to respond in the comments as if what he posted was factual and accurate. He never edited or took down the post or acknowledged he knew it was false.

Seems pretty pointless sometimes.

I first heard about this tonight on CBS news and the blurp or whatever was something like, "At the Canada border, tonight, a possible terrorist attack when a car crashed into a border check point on a bridge connecting New York and Canada. Officials say there is no indication that this was a terror attack and may have been a tragic accident." I was like... wat? A "possible terrorist attack" that also appeared to be a tragic accident? The report then went on to emphasize several times that there was no evidence it was an attack and was just an accident.

This was the evening news so, by the time that story went on the air they already knew authorities didn't think it was an attack, yet they led with "possible terrorist attack" right out of the gate. That was bad. Bad CBS! BAD!

Ah, that's right. "Religion of peace". Another one to add to my fetishized phrase list.

The phrase "high rate of speed" is always wrong. It's like saying "a high speed of speed". The sentence as stated was essentially saying, it was changing speed at a high speed of speed.
