1,290 days, 1,335 days, forty two months, 1,260 days; 3 1/2 years are all indications of a time of testing, judgment, or tribulation. It's approximately 3 1/2 years or less in several cases.
The angel told Daniel the following...
Daniel 12:6 (NIV2011)
6 One of them said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, How long will it be before these astonishing things are fulfilled?
Speaking of the tribulation and final judgment of Israel.
Daniel 12:7 (NIV2011)
7 The man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, lifted his right hand and his left hand toward heaven, and I heard him swear by him who lives forever, saying, It will be for a time, times and half a time. When the power of the holy people has been finally broken, all these things will be completed.
The Angel - possibly a Theophany - said it would be for a time, times, and a half a time - a fancy way of saying 3 1/2 years - which is an approximate number.
When the power of the holy people has been finally broken, all these things will be completed.
The power was broken - end of the war - on Elul 3rd 70AD. That is based on Daniels numbers. Josephus does not tell us the exact day of the end of the war. His most accurate date is the failure of the daily sacrifice which occurred on Tammuz 17th 70AD. Calculating 45 days later is when the war ceased, (1,335 - 1,290 = 45).
My point here is that the angel at first gave Daniel the standard approximate chronology of 3 1/2 years. Then Daniel asked for clarification because he didn't understand what he was saying. The angel then did clarify it for Daniel by becoming precisely specific. He then said...
Daniel 12:11-12 (NIV2011)
11 From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days.
12 Blessed is the one who waits for and reaches the end of the 1,335 days. (the war's end)
So the angel went from the approximate to the precise - that is how we know that the 3 1/2 years is only approximate because technically 3 1/2 years is only about 1,273 days based on the rough three year cycle of the Jewish calendar.
The short term Jewish calendar consisted of two years at 354 days (12 Lunar cycles) + one year at 383 days (13 Lunar cycles.) The average length of a year was 363.7 days. So 3 1/2 years would normally be 1,273 days. For now I am ignoring the long term Metonic correction which took a full 19 years. By adding a month of correction to the Lunar calendar every couple of years brings the Solar and Lunar calendars into unity once every 19 years.
Daniel's dates were precise and not approximate after the Angel clarified them for him. We know today from Josephus that the daily sacrifice (of two Tamid lambs) failed just like Daniel said on Tammuz 17th 70 AD. Counting backwards to find the origin or the date the count started - 1,290 days brings us to the time of Cheshvan 4th 66AD. This was the day before the retreat of Cestius Gallus.
Cestius had come to Jerusalem to put down the rebellion with somewhere between 30,000 and 45,000 troops the main contingent was the Roman 12th legion. At this time his army surrounded Jerusalem and the Terrorist Zealots had taken over the Temple at his coming. This is just what Jesus had warned his followers about - these two events - armies surrounding Jerusalem and the terrorist take over of the Temple. Get out of the city he said. They did - when a great mass of the Zealots pursued Cestius out of the city on Cheshvan the 5th 66AD and they killed almost 6,000 of his retreating forces.
And so this is when the Christians escaped the city - in this approximately 8 day window. This is why Jesus' message of escape was so urgent. It was the Zealots, terrorists, and Sacarii who were killing anyone who wanted to leave the city as they were considered traitors as was the outlawed peace party of Ananus ben Ananus. It has to be because there was no Roman presence in Jerusalem between Cheshvan 5th 66AD and Nissan 14th 70Ad when Titus started his siege of Jerusalem. So the Christians had three years to escape - no they didn't - because of the reason stated. They only had about 8 days.
John in the book of Revelation Chapter 12 gives us a history of the Church from the birth of Christ up to the time that he wrote the book. In it he references 1,260 days where God provided for his people in Pella. This again was symbolically approximate and was equal to the 1,335 days - not precise.
In summary, 1,260 days; 3 1/2 years; and 42 months are all symbols of a time of testing or tribulation. Only the 1,290 and 1,335 day period of Daniel is accurate to the day. Israel was in tribulation for 3 1/2 years when Elijah shut off the rain and caused a drought. Nero persecuted the Christians for 3 1/2 years, Domitian 3 1/2 years, Jerusalem 3 1/2 years (according to the angel's first estimate). And so it is sometimes literal and sometimes approximate.
