Is forgiveness something you give to the other person, or is it something the other person receives? If forgiveness is a gift, can the other person not accept your forgiveness?

It does not matter if the other person accepts your forgiveness.  If you have forgiven then you have done what God expected of you.  If the other person does not want to accept the forgiveness then they will have to take that up with God.

That's under OC. Jesus said those things under law. after the cross, its forgive becos you HAVE BEEN forgiven.

We forgive because the Love of Christ is within us.

if u dont believe me, you can do a simple test with your PC Bible. Do a simple word search for "forgive" "forgiven" "forgiveness". look at the list of verses your PC generates and go thru them down the list. You'll find that AFTER the cross, its always forgive cos you have forgiveness already. so you'll never find the epistles telling the church to forgive otherwise God will not forgive.
:)

the scriptures I posted are the words that Jesus spoke. take another look at this one

Mark
11:26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

Mark 11:26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

well God also said in his Word an eye for an eye, or get circumcised, or sacrifice a lamb for you sins, etc... so i guess we should heed those things too, reason being they are God's words -- the very Words of the Father?

and i guess the words of the risen Christ written down by Paul that WE HAVE forgiveness, ARE forgiven already are:

1. not really God-inspired becos they contradict Jesus's words in Mark 11:26

2. are superceded by the Christ who had not died and risen yet.

Rightly divide the Word, as Jesus himself did.

38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

now let me ask you a simple question, suppose you suddenly died without having forgiven a person of his sin against you that made you mad for a while. then by your argument, if wld mean that you died without God having forgiven you of yours sins. do you still go to heaven with unforgiven sins? or is there another 'chance' in heaven to forgive b4 God lets you through? or is there some mid-way place like purgatory where you purge off unforgiven sins? what about the blood and work of Jesus -- sounds incomplete and ineffective to me.

it is the same with confession. suppose you did not confess every sin and died. what happens? do you still do to heaven with sins? purgatory first?

Andrew,
I have complete faith that I will not die suddenly without forgiving someone, and here's why. I have already been hurt in the worst way I can possibly even imagine by someone, I immidiatly asked God to show me how to forgive them. Because I knew how important it was to do this. God has taught me how to be quick to forgive. If you stay angry with someone then you have not forgiven them. And yes I do believe that if we allow anger to remain in our hearts we will not make it to heaven.

We are not allowed to continue to sin just because of the cross. And we cannot use the Word of God to argue against the Word of God. It just doesn't work that way.

only anger? I'm sure the list is longer than that. so i guess by your theology most Christians wont make it to heaven eventually.

Well I'm not getting through to you, despite showing you the proofs, so I'll let it be.

It's not my theology, It's Gods Word! The very words that Jesus spoke himself.

Jesus tells us that not all who consider themeselves to be Christians will make it to heaven.

Matthew
7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

7:24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
7:25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
7:26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
7:27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
