So if you were a potential cause of someone getting sick, why wouldn't you just get your shot and spare them the potential misery?

I should do something just in case because something else might happen? Even when the doing it doesn't mean that the something won't happen (necessarily)? That's not really how I generally live my life. Sorry.

Rest assured, though, that people aren't dropping dead around me.

I'm sure not. But if we were talking measles vaccination, would you feel the same way?

As I noted, I get my children vaccinated. I guess I should also note that I am vaccinated.

I feel differently about measles and the other things than I do about the flu. I don't want to get (or my children to get) those diseases, but the flu I am not afraid of. I know it kills people, but *shrug*

I don't know why, but I find this extremely hilarious. Like, in the good way. :p

Honestly I was having trouble putting thoughts into words ^_^

I guess what I was trying to say was, while I know specific groups of people cannot get the shots, if the flu shot works like it's supposed to, those who can get the shot should be fine around me anyway. Others should be taking more precautions.

I'm in your camp.

I very rarely get the flu, so I'm not sure the shots are needed in my case. Moreover, my understanding is that the shots only protect you from the last round of viruses. It does little or nothing to protect you from the most recent mutations?

No. They try to "guess" (and that's a horrible term to use here, but those scientists have their ways) the most virulent strain and produce vaccines according to that.

At any rate, all you nay-sayers - get the flu like I had last summer, and you will clutch at ANYTHING to help ward it off. I promise. I was bed-ridden for two weeks. I cried. A lot. I wanted to die. Repeatedly. It was the most horrible sickness I've EVER had.

Each year's batch of vaccinations are based on previous years' strains, so the vaccine manufacturers make educated guesses on how the virus will mutate in the coming year. Flu vaccines are created in the spring for the next fall/winter's flu season. So it's not true that the shot protects you from "the most recent mutation", if I'm understanding what you mean by that correctly. Reseachers watch the flu strains year-round and do their best guess as to what strains will be most prevalent in the coming year. Most years they get it right, but obviously, sometimes they don't.

I think forcing children in school to get flu shots is fine, because flu shots are important to have healthy children that don't die or have serious health problems for the rest of their lives for no reason; especially if any of the children in schools are immunocompromised and as a result can't get flu shots or other vaccinations.

I'm at a bit of an impasse with forced vaccinations, because on one hand, people should be able to decide for themselves what to do, but on the other hand, if you don't vaccinate you're putting people that you come into contact with at risk for no good reason, as well as yourself, and I really don't think that you should suffer or die just because you're crazy or an idiot.

Sounds awful. That still falls under my category of I haven't gotten it though.

You have my sympathy though. That's worse than I've ever been sick.

Were you diagnosed via a lab test with the flu? I'm not saying you didn't have it, but I'm curious, cause while the flu can be really miserable, if you were literally crying and wanted to die, that doesn't sound like the flu lol.

Or are you just kind of wimpy when it comes to being sick? I'm not trying to be mean, honest, but I know some people just cannot handle being sick and turn into big balls of mush lol. I was sick every other week as a kid, so being in bed and feeling awful is sort of par for the course for me. But like, my husband, who is normally healthy as an ox, when he gets sick, you'd think he was literally dying the way he moans and lays around like a corpse lol.

Can't think of why anyone would object to the vaccine to be honest unless it can be proved there is are serious side effects directly linked to it. In the UK we have had problemns with anti vaccine people refusing to get their kids vaccinated against measles, whooping cough or German measles. I think as a society we take for granted most people`s childhoods these days are not blighted by these illnesses. But people forget the only reason that young kids aren't dropping like flies anymore as they used to until the 60s is because of vaccines

The flu vaccine is not 100 percent effective. I used to get the flu every year before I started getting vaccinated several years ago . This is the first time in years I've come down with the flu.

Some of the more virulent flu strains have killed people that never complain of getting sick.

What do you guys think about this? Does the health department have the right to force its employees to be immunized against the flu (or any other disease that it deems is a risk - we have to be immunized against several things)?

Where do you draw the line between respecting an individual's privacy and protecting the health of the community?
I'm not familiar with the type of work that state health department employees do. Do you have regular contact with people in healthcare settings (blind post)? All healthcare workers have to be immunized, and I agree with that. I would say the same for anyone who is in a similar position.
Strange.

I thought that your government believed a woman has right of control over her own body. That's what they always say when excusing abortion...

Or in other words no they do not have the right to force this upon you, and it is a deeply creepy move.
Making a flu shot a condition of a certain profession is a bit different than forcing any citizen who becomes pregnant to carry to term.

Granted, I *AM* wimpy when I'm sick (honestly, what man is not?), but this was bad. Really bad. And it was the flu, verified by a flu test. Influenza B. I had the worst body aches, 102 fevers, chills, sweats, sore throat, stuffy nose, headaches - you name it.

That's definitely more than I ever had. Typically my illnesses are minor. The worst one, though, was an episode of bronchitis. I was largely okay until the antibiotics they gave me left me in bed for 3 days.

I know, 3 days compared to your 2 weeks, but I keep myself moving as much as I can even when I am sick. I don't want to inconvenience people (and that's a personal thing. I don't fault anyone who needs help).

I had to be waited on hand and foot. My poor partner. That guy deserves a medal. lol

For someone who doesn't experience that a lot, I know it can probably seem like you really ARE dying lol. Forgive my chuckling... :) I probably get something like that once a year or so. It sucks. I guess I'm just used to it.
