For all those "Grammer Nazis" out there... here's a sentence for you to chew on! :D

I always see those people who attack other's grammar (or politely correct it), so I came up with the following sentence to help people know when to use what words:

Rather than lie and affect the effect of this Colonel's kernel of knowledge called the Tale of a Goose's Tail and a Lot of Boys who Allot their Time Unwisely, I must tell you it's true then that they're out there on their boat in its cabin throwing food at the tails of a couple of geese upon the water, assenting to the planned ascent of High Hills this evening to sum up their day as some passersby yelled "Hi!" to the High Hills adventurous boys and threw food through their two boats’ windows to the two geese there too.
:prayer:
:help:

Chew on that one for a while :p

Disclaimer: This is meant as a humorous posing. I am one of the afore mentioned "Grammar Nazis". Also, for those of you who dealt with the actual Nazis, I mean no disrespect whatsoever. Nothing will ever compare to the atrocities of the Nazi regime and others that do the same horrible acts to their fellow human beings.

as you should be. very confusing indeed =)
And the fact that the entire sentence is grammatically correct, punctuated correctly, and spelled correctly is the best part.

I'm glad I found this subforum... I'm going to have to start posting here :D

Feel free... just tell 'em Friar Erasmus wrote it, and that you got it from ChristianForums.com, and use it as an opportunity to share Christ with the other pro writing majors you know... It would be nice to know that my funny sentence could give someone an opportunity to share Christ with another. :D

 will do. It is a Christian school though....most of the people I'd be showing it to are the ones helping ME in my walk.

Haha nice one! It twists the mind, yet by most standards it's grammatically perfect - but if you want to be REALLY, ULTRA, MEGA, ABSOLUTELY, SUPER, (etc etc) STRICT, maybe you could argue that it should be:

Rather than lie and affect the effect of this Colonel's kernel of knowledge called the Tale of a Goose's Tail and a Lot of Boys who Allot their Time Unwisely, I must tell you that it's true then that they're out there on their boat in its cabin throwing food at the tails of a couple of geese upon the water, assenting to the planned ascent of High Hills this evening to sum up their day as some passersby yelled "Hi!" to the High Hills adventurous boys and threw food through their two boats’ windows to the two geese there too.

(Sorry - that's a bit of a desperate last throw of the dice there, but you threw down the gauntlet so I couldn't resist trying SOME kind of challenge! :p )

 There is literary contention on the use of the word "that." In this case, I believe that grammatically speaking, the word "that" is optional. For readability sake, I chose to exercise that option and remove it. I did initially have the word at that point in the sentence, but it did not read well. Perhaps it would be better written thisly:

"...I must tell you then that it's true that they're out there..."

Perhaps this is the more grammatically correct way to phrase this? Regardless, this was created off the top of my head in a 15 minute period of time, so I believe it was pretty accurate, considering the time spent. :D Nice catch, though.
...
I can't believe that we are discussing the usage of the word "that!"

(...and I thought I was bad! :p)

P.S. I know that the last sentence is not correct, in that it is using a conjunction at the beginning of a sentence, but considering that it is a common verbal usage, and a way of speaking I often use, I decided to err on the side of common speech rather than perfection... ha ha! Also, I purposely misspelled thusly.

Is it bad when I desperately want to write a letter to a publisher with every grammar and spelling error I run into in books that have been in print for over 30 years?:eek::doh:

I really do get out my "Red Pen of Doom" when I see those. I may not write the publisher, but I do make a point of feeling puffed up by the act of correcting the text in my copy! ;)
