  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

***********************UPDATE ON POST 16******************
Can a child develope an allergy to a food even though the child has never had one before?

OS (6yo) has had diarrhea for a little over a week. It's been on and off and he's staying hydrated. The only trigger that I can see is peanut butter.
This is what his chart looks like:

Sat: PB cookies
Sun: AM diarrhea. Sun PM cookies
Mon: AM diarrhea 2X.
Tues: Nothing.
Wed: Peanut butter sandwich for school.
Wed into Thurs. all night: Diarrhea.
Thur: Nothing.
Fri: Peanut butter sandwich for school. Diarrhea PM.
Sat. Diarrhea. No PB given in the day
Sun. No Diarrha. No PB given in the day.
Mon: Peanut butter sandwich. Diarrhea 4X at night.

Never ever ever had a reaction to PB and I'm not sure it is the PB but it seems like it would be. BTW, the PB came from 2 different sources so it can't be 'my jar' .
I figured it might be the PB but decided to try one more time yest. and that's when he seemed to get hit with diarrhea again.

So, PB sensitivity? He has only one other allergy to a food and that's a food easily avoidable but it causes the same reaction.

BTW, we were away last weekend and had a wild week. He usually doesn't eat that much PB! LOL

It can happen! Happens a lot actually, which is why it is such a great idea to keep a food journal and/or log on your calendar as to what you guys have for meals each day from the get-go of solid food introduction :)

There is almondbutter out there, not as good as PB, but it tastes close enough to be satisfactory if you can have almonds but not peanuts.. and there's hazelnutbutter out there too. (same idea)

Might want to keep an eye on it though, as some people who develop allergies to peanuts later develop allergies to all legumes. (my dad is so there at this point :()

Thanks. I'm going to cut off PB for now. I *might* try PB in a few weeks to confirm it's that.

BE CAREFUL!

If he is that allergic that the diarrhea is happening, then he could end up with a much worse reaction.
Peanut and Tree Nut allergies can end up very serious very quickly.
If I were you, I would take him off the peanuts and get him into an allergist. I would not try to give him peanuts again at home.
Not trying to freak you out, or over-react, but peanuts are one of the worst/highest risk for anaphylaxis. In fact, diarrhea is one of the symptoms of anaphylaxis.
And it can get bad really, really quick.

Sorry, don't want to scare, just inform.....we have nut allergies here.

short answer

yes

DD developed a latex allergy at 4. other DD allergy to carrots and potatoes later on too. It happens. The more you're exposed to someting the more potential there is to be sensitized.

Thanks. I know the allergies of Peanuts, there are a few variables so I just *might* check to make sure it's the peanut butter...not sure yet. I'll see. For all I know he might have diarrhea again today or tomorrow even though I've stopped it. I'll see...Thanks for your concern though :)

It would be to peanuts, and things with peanuts in it too.... I mean because peanut butter is "peanuts, sugar, and a really small amount of stuff like hydrogenated oils" .... it does make sense that its something he loves, but that is so hard :( I would be really sad if anyone in my family became allergic to peanut butter (I love peanut butter).

It could also be that he's sick with something like the rotavirus that has 8-12 days of diarrhea, and maybe if he's fighting the virus real well he wouldn't have a lot of signs beyond that

That's why I'm second guessing. It's going around the school. So that's why I'm willing to cut him off PB for now, give his tummy a break and try again in a few weeks. If he gets diarrhea again, I know it's the PB but if he doesn't it could have been something else.
I did the same thing with is other very uncommon food allergy. he reacted, I waited a few weeks and tried again and sure enough he reacted again.
