  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My doctor is recommending that I get a flu shot this month because I am in my second trimester and it's now flu season. However, I've never had a flu shot because so many people I know who have gotten them have gotten really sick afterwards. I understand that pregnant women are more susceptible to viruses during pregnancy, but I've been so healthy, and the last cold I had a knocked out on my own within a week. What do you all think? Did you get a flu shot during your 2nd or 3rd trimester? Did it make you sick? Is it worth it? Thoughts? Any comments welcome. Thanks a lot.

My doctor also recomended this, I am going next week. One time (I was not preggo) I did get sick from the flu shot, but was told it was because I allready had the flu anyway then got the shot on top of that! I think it will be safe, especially if your immune system is as strong as you say!

I didn't get one. First off, it only protects against some strains of the flu not all, so there's no guarantee. Secondly, most flu shots contain some mercury. Some contain A LOT. No way I'm deliberately letting someone inject me with a substance containing mercury while I'm pregnant. Third, the flu shot can cause a fever. Fevers are bad news when you are pregnant. Fourth, I haven't had a contracted illness in over a year. I think my immune system is working just fine. I'd rather stay healthy, take vitamins and avoid too much contact with high risk people than take a mercury filled flu shot and delude myself into thinking I'm 'safe' from the flu now.

That's good to know... I was concerned about the mercury too. I think if I were at a higher risk I would get one, but I'm a major germaphobe, so I'm constantly washing my hands and instructing my high school students to do the same. Thanks for the feedback. I was leaning towards not getting one, and now I'm definitely thinking there's no way on God's green earth I'd want to take the chance. God bless!

This is one of the many reasons if my OB/GYN reccommends it I will say no.

I have a weak immune system. If I am around someone who has gotten the flu shot who also has a weak immune system, I catch it from them as their body is reacting to the injection. It's not a completely dead virus that is delivered. I think I had it once, and I was not sick when I had been there, one day later I was in the throws of the worst flu ever that lasted almost a month.

Never again.

My Dr back home in AL never reccommended my family to have the shot and I'm sticking with him because I know my gut cannot take it and I am already at risk should I get ill. I just have to be careful and bone up on zinc and vitamin c.

I read the articles that are showing why they reccommend it, and IMHO there still has not been enough study to say it is safe for those of us who are with child. :|

Used to be they told you 'no way in hell' to get the shot if pregnant or if you thought you were... wonder what the change is... :sorry:

IMHO the CDC is 'too big for their britches' so to speak and often jump the gun on items and we are the guinea pigs. :(

I was one when I was in utero, and have hearing issues (CONSTANT tinninitus) resulting from having frequent ultrasounds performed while I was in utero. They were testing them out in 80-81 on military wives more than in the public, and then later changed their reccommended amount to the public.

I have several other military brat friends who have the same issue born the same year as me.

If I could get rid of it, I would.. but it's one of those things you just have to live with...

I do worry about having a fever, as it is easy for me to get that way and my DH was recently ill. I slept on the couch and let him have the bedroom all to himself... and I was careful around him. Other than headaches and joint popping, I'm A-OK and DH is well again, our room aired out and cleaned and I'm back in there.

I just can't see the studies supporting the 'need' to get the shot, whether I am well or not.. it just never did us good in my family. Dad always got it while in the military was sick same day (not exposed as all men in certain offices got the shots in the same day on base) then we were all sick. that's soooooooooo not something I want to repeat, and the flu always knocks me out for about a month... definitely not something I can afford to do.

No way would I get a flu shot while pregnant (well, I wouldn't Anyway, but Especially not pregnant). I completely agree with gracepaint's post. There is just too much "unknown" (and what IS known is scary enough) about how the unborn baby reacts to all the ingredients in Any vaccination. Besides the mercury aspect, I also am nervous about the aluminum, formaldehyde, and other "preservatives" in the shot.

I'll also just add this to clarify,

1. The flu shot protects against only 3 versions of the flu, the ones that they "guess" will be "big" this year. There are thousands of strains of flu virus floating around.

2. It only protects against the flu that causes fever and chills, it does *not* protect against any strains of gastrointestinal flu which is the one that makes you have diarrhea and puking.

Even the Rhogam shot has mercury in it. Which is SO dumb! Why they do that is beyond me... An alternative is to wait until the baby is born to even see if the baby has a differen RH than the mother (the VAST majority of babies have the same blood type and RH factor as their mothers).

I'd rather poke my eyes out with a stick than get a shot for anything while I was pregnant. Except maybe that rhesus negative thing, but that's not a germ... plus I'm O+...
Wow... tell us what you really think LOL.

I stay away from vaccinations as a general rule, for many reasons. SOME use aborted babies in the production of the shot, and I just can't stand the thought of that!

I am Rh-, but after doing some research, decided that I didn't really need Rho-gam while I'm pregnant unless there was some trauma, car accident, etc. and so I just get the Rho-gam after the birth as a precaution. They usually check your blood to see if you have been Rh sensitized at the beginning of each pregnancy anyway.

Regardless, I don't think that it is a bad idea to be SUPER careful about what we put into our bodies while there is someone taking up residence in there!
