As Gov. Ron DeSantis pushed this summer for schools to reopen, state leaders told school boards they would need Health Department approval if they wanted to keep classrooms closed.

Then they instructed health directors not to give it.

Following a directive from DeSantis’ administration, county health directors across Florida refused to give school boards advice about one of the most wrenching public health decisions in modern history: whether to reopen schools in a worsening pandemic, a Gannett USA TODAY NETWORK review found.

In county after county the health directors’ refrain to school leaders was the same: Their role was to provide information, not recommendations.

Desantis is a complete scumbag, not only has he done nothing to actually help, in many cases he's actually told those DOING something to stop, like when he demanded all beaches re-open after various mayors and such closed them.

Some follow up from this disturbing act to keep schools open by muzzling the health department.

Florida schools defy DeSantis order to keep virus stats under wraps

With no statewide standard, local leaders are left to decide on their own how and when to report Covid-19 cases in their districts. The result is a mix of differing daily and weekly reports and digital dashboards at school districts across Florida, with some counties not reporting any data to the general public.

The state Department of Health has tried to directly quash reporting on the virus in some instances, after DeSantis said K-12 testing data “needs to be put in the right context.”

The state and local showdown over coronavirus messaging is the latest example of how state health officials have aided in the Republican governor’s plan to keep schools open during the pandemic. The state health department was “notably absent” when local school boards sought advice for closing classrooms during the pandemic, essentially forcing them to reopen, a circuit court judge wrote in an Aug. 24 ruling.

They're following their "dear leader's" lead. If you keep up a happy face, don't do any testing and don't allow any factual news about the pandemic, then maybe no one will notice all the sick people and dead bodies.

Since many Florida public schools opened their doors about a month ago, the number of children under 18 who have contracted Covid-19 statewide has jumped 26%, state data show.

Gov. Ron DeSantis continues to push for in-person instruction across the Sunshine State. Even though his administration has released county-level data that indicates the 26% jump, it has not released school-level Covid-19 data for all K-12 public schools, which CNN began asking the state Department of Health for on August 31. On September 2 -- nearly two weeks ago -- state officials said by email the data would be released in the coming days and weeks.

But still, the state hasn't provided this key information.

On campus, 'people were breaking the rules'
Florida began reopening schools August 10. On that day, 42,761 children under 18 statewide were infected with the coronavirus, the state Department of Health reported.

One month later, 53,717 Florida children have tested positive for Covid-19, with a positivity rate of 14.3%, statewide data show.

In Martin County, the positivity rate among children tested is 20.5%, according to the latest state data.

The Martin County School District is one of those districts that releases its own Covid-19 data via the news media. One day after reopening, an entire classroom was placed under quarantine. A month later, it has reported 23 positive or presumed positive cases and has quarantined 510 students. The district has 16,500 K-12 students.

With positivity rates at 15%-20%, I think the state is under-testing. Probably intentionally.

I honestly believe that the supporters of Governor DeSantis could watch their children die in front of their eyes and still back their governor 100%.

Governor DeSantis lifts remaining restrictions in Florida.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) announced Friday the state will completely reopen its economy, allowing restaurants to operate at full capacity and barring localities from ordering businesses to close.

  • Cities and counties would be forced to justify any localized restrictions that bring capacity below 100%.
  • "We’re not closing anything going forward," DeSantis said at a press conference.
The big picture: Florida's coronavirus case count over the past week has been steady, averaging about 2,700 new daily cases over the past week.

Although that's better than the many 10,000+ case days over the summer, that's still about twice as many daily cases as Florida had on the worst days of April and May.

I think that is a sick and twisted comment coming from a bitter individual. You lost, get over it. The virus was defeated and isn't all that bad, be thankful instead of being so nasty. No one wants to watch their child die.... o_O

What a thing to say...

My sister in law wants all restrictions taken down where she lives. When I brought up the “think about the children” angle, she said that if her kids get COVID and die, it’s because it’s the will of god. So yes, some people would sacrifice their children for their politics.

And in what world is the virus “defeated”?

I don’t think these people want to watch their children die but I do think they lack the mental acuity to connect that their governor’s actions are causing a very dangerous situation for their children.

You’re right about this virus not being all bad. The denigration of critical thinking skills in this country has been shown which, while it is much worse than I think anyone thought, it is good to know where it stands.

The long term affects of this disease is still not known and some of the stuff like inflamed lungs, chronic cough, and myocarditis still existing months after some people have had it is alarming. Couple this with Republican plan to take through a Supreme Court justice in time to hear an argument to destroy pre-existing conditions protections, this is terrifying. COVID-19 can easily be considered a pre-existing condition. It would make it extremely difficult for anyone who had this to get insurance if they were to lose their current coverage for any reason. This is really bad.

The comment is a bit extreme. But it's certainly true that states have made different tradeoffs between safety and the economy, and De Santis has at times prioritized the economy. Florida seems stable now. Its current death rate is high compared with states that got hit early and now have it reasonably controlled, though the total rate over the whole epidemic is highest in the NE, Louisiana and Mississippi. There's no reason to doubt that Florida could get it down, but as a tourist destination it would probably have to shut down all tourism to do it. I can understand why the governor doesn't want to do that.

That's not sacrificing your children. Life happens, and it is not always fair. I think it is a very bigoted point of view to assume your sister doesn't care for her children just because she wants the unconstitutional restrictions removed. What? She is a bad Mom because she doesn't agree with your point of view?

Have you ever even considered you're wrong? And she is doing far more to protect her child than to heed your political view on the matter?

And in what world is the virus “defeated”?

I was talking about the narrative. The narrative is dead, it failed.

Well that's not what is being witnessed in real life. Starvation is a very real threat in central Fla. People need to get back to work. Need to make money and pay bills. In hard times people do not always have the luxury of having easy choices to make. Their kids aren't sick, they aren't getting sick, but they have no money to feed them or pay the mortgage to keep a roof over their child. Suicide is also skyrocketing due to despair. Things have to go back to normal so more otherwise healthy people do not die.

Lots of people get awfully judgmental without considering the ramifications of these shutdowns on others.

That was already done. All of I drive was shut down, and all of the parks. They have recently reopened.

But it's certainly true that states have made different tradeoffs between safety and the economy, and De Santis has at times prioritized the economy.

Well that is where we are at right now. The threat is not coming from this virus. It is the shutdown that is hurting as, and is the threat. That and the gang wars over drugs. Word on the street here, there is almost no fentanyl or heroine, and pot is worthless because it is legal. Lots of people currently getting shot over it.

You mean the information from our nation's public health authorities?

Yeah, that would be it. The CDC even admits they are conflating statistics, and inflating numbers. This is all about social control.

No, but agents of disinformation would have you think so.
