  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I wrote down a list I saw at a geology lecture.

20 ways the world could end suddenly: (but I only have eight)

Asteroid impact
Gamma-ray burst
Collapse of a vacuum
Rogue black holes
Giant solar flares
Reversal in the Earth's magnetic feild
Flood basalt volcanism
Global epidemics

The one that caught my eye was this "Flood basalt volcanism". I thought perhaps we could talk about it since the Flood is constantly in debate. Except, I don't know exactly what it is.

"Basalt" is oceanic material that forms through rapid cooling of magma at divergent plate boundaries. Perhaps they are talking about massive volcanic upheavals in ocean floor that would raise the sea level enough to Flood the earth. Would the "water world" be temporary? Wouldn't the dense oceanic plate sink back to its original level (through melting or leveling)?

Except, we would totally have a different ocean floor if this happened in the past. Or would we? The ocean floor is is like ?140 million? years old at the latest due to plate subduction. If there was anything like this, it would likely have occured before our oldest peice of the atlantic plates.

Yes, flood basalts produce large ingeous provinces such as the Deccan traps. I started a thread on flood basalts, super volcanoes and asteriod impacts in the context of the young earth some time ago.

Maybe I will bump it.
