Its the closest planet to earth. Even in prehistory Mars would have been a sight often seen and pondered over. We know that these prehistory cultures looked to the skies and that was their gods, the stars and planets.
We also see this in the Greco Roman beliefs where gods and dieties based on Mars were prominent. Even being the States official religion.
So I can see how Mars has always been a focus of gods and then some sort of life beyond earth which is transcedent to what is happening on earth and the limits people percieve to its existence. But also to the survival of humankind itself. Which is related to the gods in that its about life beyond our experience of earth.

I think after we landed on the moon attention went to Mars as a possibility. We also had the 'War of the Worlds' radio show with Orsen Wells which was basicially about an attack from Martians on earth lol.
