In my opinion, everyone should own a bright, high quality flashlight. Being so useful in an emergency event, it's a good idea to invest in one.

So lets discuss what one should look for in a light. What defines a quality light? Do you prefer a certain brand? What lights do you own? If your life depended on it, would you have confidence it would work properly?

I prefer a compact, single AA battery powered LED light. Usually constructed of aluminum, with a strong glass lens. Water resistance is important to me. I have a decent supply of AA batteries.

AA batteries are always my go-to for anything like that. Most of the higher-end torches use CR123s I believe they're called but in this context you're going to want one of the most readily available batteries, not something that is rare outside of a select few items.

I use a powerful LED flashlight. I have three kinds. One that uses batteries. One that uses solar paneling and one that you shake up and down to power.

I have this weird aversion to flashlights.

I used to play with them as a kid, no problems, but then for some reason I developed this phobia (photoaugliaphobia?) related to them and now I prefer using one of those push-on/push-off dome lights that have a soft white glow, rather than a harsh definitive beam, during power outages. Or just the soft glow from my cellphone screen if nothing else is available.

People like pictures, so here is my current light, a ZebraLight SC51. Had it for a number of years, with no issues. Runs off AA battery, and is very bright. Believe this model has been discontinued.

Headlamps can sometimes be more useful than a hand held. I had one fail on me though during a camping trip, the button no longer clicked/broke. It was a plastic one made by the company Princeton Tec.

My sister has a better one though. Produced by Fenix Light. The HL23 headlamp runs on an AA, is constructed of aluminum with a glass lens. Is water resistant. We got it online for near 30 US dollars.

After a number of years as a daily use work light, this TerraLux light broke. An image of it all worn out. It's LED bulb cracked in half. I like pocket clips.
