  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Oh man, what am I to do? I have the long hair* Fish loves

Obviously, since you agree with me*, you must be a woman of excellent taste. ;)

* Granted, just because you wear your hair long doesn't mean you necessarily actually agree with me, but I'm giving you the benefit of a doubt. ;)

Okay here you go:
And this works alright for me my hair was super short- but I had long fringe in the back and front. This is me, my bro, and all our cousins with my dad's mum this past summer (I'm bottom right corner- my bro has red hair)

Ah, but in the first long-haired picture you weigh more than the short-haired picture and in the second, you have glasses. And in the short-haired picture, your smile is wider, and you have a nice smile so that artificially improves it. I am on to your deck-stacking. ;) I declare that you look better with long hair despite the contrary evidence! ;) It must be so, because I never wrong. ;) Someone want to take the short-haired Shannon picture and photo-shop in long hair so we can compare two identical pictures? I am confident I shall be proven right in the end. (insert 6th winking smilely they won't let me use without becoming a "site supporter" here)

But on a more serious note, exercise. Nothing to keep good muscle tone like exercise. And the best one of all - do squats once per week. It will stoke your metabolic rate into hyperdrive, keep your legs toned, and make your stomach more rock hard than crunches ever could.

And don't believe the old myth that squats will make your butt big, it won't. Ever see a female body-builder with a big butt? They have quite the opposite. Just get the weight heavy enough to be able to do 15-20 reps. per set. It's the one anaerobic exercise that will get you winded

Yes. Squats and/or deadlifts. Don't forget to work your biggest muscles.

Park farther away from the doors wherever you go...work, shopping etc.

Don't buy chips, pop and other junk food.

Drink lots of water.

Stay away from the booze.

Work out 1/2 hour a day.

I don't do any of these things but it sounds simple.

Are you kidding!
Well, I do 2 out of 4 of them. Don't like chips and junk food anyway. I do not have an extra 1/2 hour to work out. Besides I don't have the lung capacity.

I see nude women every day. I have to change into sterile scrubs for work, so I see them in the locker room. One woman who must be in her 50’s and very thin, has the nastiest flabbiest legs I’ve ever seen. Oh sure she fake bakes so that the flab is dark colored, but it still looks nasty. So how does one who is aging prevent this? She’s not overweight, far from it.

I take the steps all the time. I am glad that I do.

What other simple ways can we prevent flab from taking over?

First let me clear the throwup from my mouth. Ok thats better.

No one in there 50's is going to look like someone in their 20's, I mean no one. But that said. A good program combining cardio and weight training will help , what you have look better. But no matter how much a guy or girl in their 40 and 50's works out, the tell tale signs of aging wwill always be there. The skin is less taut and muscle tone is less defined.

I always ran when I was younger. I ran road races and even 2 marathons. Boston of course. I also lifted weights. I still do now, but the running has ceased. I just had surgery to clean out my left knee and I am recovering. But the KEY for an older person, Is Diet (meaning eating well) cardio and weight training. Then you won't look like melted candlewax in the changing room :p

I know this is kind of a light hearted thread, and I'm kind of in the spirit of things with my long hair versus short hair stuff, but, on a more serious note, it's probably worth saying the obvious: In the long run, people's worth isn't determined by what they look like. As one gets older, no matter how much one might exercise or what sort of botox one in injects in one's face, one's going to show signs of that age. Gray hair and a few wrinkles is a sign that you've survived life and gotten through to the point where you can have those things, and hopefully picked up a little bit of wisdom along the way. It's not all bad.

It takes me less than twenty minutes to do my hair, from shower to finish.

I would be worried about getting old, too if I didn't do any better than that. Honey, after age 40 you get yourself a magnifying mirror. For each year after 40, you have to add a few more minutes to dealing with makeup and hair.
I am 71 and I give myself over an hour to get ready in the morning, after my shower.

Ok, If you took a picture of my legs, you would think, maybe 35 to 40. They have held up well. My belly is my big problem.
I am a week into Atkins again. I spent the entire summer losing 20 pounds and the holidays to gain them back.
I haven't seen my own hair color since I was 18 years old. It is red and red it will stay. And, I agree. I have it shoulder length right now, way long enough at my age but I have it styled carefully, avoiding "old lady"styles.

Here is my problem. Lung cancer took part of my right lung. Excercise is now a problem for me. I have done yoga, which I miss dreadfully, it is just so expensive, I walk as best I can. More than anything, I am exquisitely happy. I do not regret anything in my life and there are still things I want to do. I became a Flight Attendant at 62 years old and am now working for the State of California in a job I love.

And for reference my hair now

I think it looks better shorter- my fringe looked pretty good, too when the top was really short

Very cute. I like it.

LOL, thanks, I do have great taste! :D

(Mike, I had a normal school education. Well, normal... at least same as HoB had. )

I prefer Shannon with shorter hair. Great picture!

It looks really cute.
You have beautiful eyes. Do you use a green eyeshadow?

I love Lancomes Artliner eyeliner in iced black. Would look great with your coloring.
Sometimes I wear a gel green eye liner--sometimes liquid black.brown. In that picture I don't think I put makeup on yet- and any green hue is post-shower makeup residue LOL

Fish- I wasn't trying to stack the deck- I have almost no pictures of me with long hair (despite the fact I wore my hair long for two years-go figure).

If you knew me IRL- you would see that not only does short hair look better on me- but it just suits me- like Teshi wrote-there's a bit of the imp about me-short hair just suits my personality. also I like to change my hair all the time and dye it all different...and you can't do that with long hair. Having crazy hair, I discovered is really kinda part of me- I feel most me when I have funky hair.

Peacful Dove--the Living Arts yoga DVDs are pretty good for doing at home :) And an hour!!?? I think I'd shoot myself--takes me about 5 minutes to get ready-10 if I am doing full make-up....even 10 seems like an eternity-I just don't have the patience to spend more than that:doh:

Shannon I think you look really good in that second picture in the pink. Maybe it's because we get the full body effect, I dunno. rowr.
Thanks :) I really like that picture, too.

I look totally different depending on what side or angle you look at me--it's really odd. I am also seriously unphotogenic- and so it is rare to find a photo which actually looks like me...the second two are about the only one's I've got that actually resemble me...lol!!
