  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

And make sure you are eating enough protein. Most people don't. If you don't have the proper building blocks for making muscle, it won't matter what activities you do.

Is logical, but do most folks really not get enough protein?

Yes...this was something we covered hard in nutrition class. Our instructor is a register dietician and I don't think a single one of us in our class was eating as much as she recommended.

Ironically, when my teen son needed to lose weight this summer, she put him on a diet where he could eat as much lean protein and veggies as he could consume (and trust me, teen boys can put away some food). The weight just fell off of him .... and this was without increasing his activity.

If you are building muscle, you need to increase your protein intake so that you don't burn muscle for fuel....protein is the only source of nutrients for your brain and central nervous system. Carbs and fat don't convert to the right kind of body sugar.

If i could clarify...

"While protein serves as a building block to repair and maintain the integrity of your cells, tissues and organs and fat is involved in the production of hormones and is a constituent of the membrane of each of your cells, the main role of carbohydrates is to provide energy. Some of your body cells, especially in your brain and your red blood cells, prefer to run on glucose, a type of sugar that can be obtained through the consumption of carbohydrates. When you exercise, your muscles can also use glucose as their main source of fuel".
.
Carbs are actually the energy for brain and central nervous system function, not protein.
Protein is in fact used to build muscle, tendons and ligamnets, through the amino acids.
Fats ARE a healthy and mandatory part of healthy body function.

Sounds like your son was running on Ketosis.. (atkins hybrid).. which is effective for short term weight loss, however cutting all carbs from a diet is a temporary solution with little known long term effects...

I'm not sure how to fit this into the current health talk but I used to eat taco bell and other terrible places (along with drinking soda/pop). Then I stopped an switched to places like Chipotles who has fresh organic food. I feel MUCH better after eating there and overall have more energy.

Of course you still need to read their nutrition menu and make sure what you order is not to crazy because of the spice they add can add alot of sodium. My mother tends to get everything her chicken burrito like sour cream, guac, cheese...etc which to me unbalances the meal, more so since shes always saying she doesn't like the weight she had and the fact her liver is giving her issues. >.<

Mind you she also drinks about half a bottle of wine a night. She wants to be at my wedding, I told her if you want to be at it stop drinking and take care of yourself so can see your only child get married. And more so you can see your grandkids (if that time comes).

I have a major exam tomorrow...so I will probably not have time to look this up and document it...but proteins are the source of amino acids and amino acids are necessary for neurotransmission...hence the activity in the brain and CNS. If the body does not get enough protein, it will start burning skeletal muscle to gain the necessary amino acids because the body will do everything it can do to save the brain.

I am fairly sure that there is an additional element...but again, it has been a year since I have done this.

And as for my son, yes, the lean protein and veggies was a crash program to get him to meet a height/weight requirement for a backpacking trip. The doctor was already satisfied that he was physically in acceptable condition for the trip (and his scoutmaster (a Ironman athlete) verified that he did not have any trouble completing the 90 mile trip). However, his diet is still supposed to be primarily lean protein and veggies...with "healthy" choices of carbs and fat in moderation. This registered dietician is a very knowledgible and highly regarded with clients across the states...(more than one certification and master degree in this topic).

Open mouth...insert foot...

Glucose does seem to be the primary energy source for the brain (among other organs)...and of course, carbs provide the easiest and fastest source of glucose.

I will have to dig out my nutrition book this weekend and see what it is that I am mixing up...

Protein is necessary for muscle growth and repair...and I know it was necessary for something else...but I will defer to dryvrgrl and her expertise on this because I know it is a bigger part of her life. My focus is now on wound repair...and that is all I have the energy to deal with right now.

Thanks for correcting me.

Does everyone know the difference between a registered dietician and a nutritionist? A nutritionist is a certificate program and maybe a 2 year education. A registered dietician is a 6 year degree program (a master's degree is required).

WOW! I did not know that Black.. Thanks. Good to know

Depends on what stage of their eating disorder they are...most dieticians are recovering from some eating disorder according to my instructor...so the slightly heavier ones are actually often the healthier ones.
