I've wanted to do a date where we'd go biking, roller skating, or walking down this really nice trail near the city where I live and then later catching a movie at the local drive in theather that night, having dinner on a blanket under the stars. Unfortunately I haven't found any interested clients or takers yet.

Once did UNC/Duke as a third date. It was a fun idea, but it's so loud in the Dean Dome that it's worthless as a date idea.

Heard a story of a guy who, for a first date, they went to the airport in Raleigh, flew down to Atlanta, went to some really fancy restaurant, and then flew back that night. Suppose that proves some folks got more money than brains.

Nowadays, if I ever had the inclination or ability to date, the most exciting thing to do here is go to the bowling alley. Might not be all together that bad of a date.

Our first date was ice skating with some of my husband's friends. It had many advantages...it was fun, there were no dark corners, we got to talk heaps - but there was a nondescript chat option, and best of all there was a great reason for him to HOLD MY HAND! Because I couldn't skate without his help.

Most of our dates were 'cheap' dates because we were only teenagers. But we had heaps of fun. We would go for walks at the beach or in the park, have video nights with our friends, go into town for cake or ice cream, have a picnic etc etc. My husband would often plan 'surprise' dates for me, so I wouldn't know in advance what we would be doing. There were a couple of times when we planned special exciting (and more expensive) dates, like a day trip or a concert. But most of the time we spent together was helping at youth retreats and running Bible studies.
We decided that we wouldn't go out for dinner until we turned 20, because it was too much of a 'grown up' date. So we didn't!
When my husband proposed he planned a day filled with all the things we would do on our dates.

The first time I met my wife to be was at a high school kegger. We were both a bit buzzed but from what we remember we got on pretty well and liked eachother. We went to another party after that and thanks to some kids thinking that blasting off dynamite in a parking lot was a good idea, the cops came. We both escaped through a field and into a woods, but not together.
We didn't see eachother again for several years, when I ran into her with a mutual friend of ours at a bar. I noticed that she had a very short "pixie" haircut and asked if she was a lesbian now. She replied in the negative and it was on form there. It probably doesn't count as a date, because it wasn't planned and we just ran into eachother. I guess our first real date was a night or two later, I took her out for dinner and to a bar or two, after that we stopped at my old elementary school's playground and I pushed her on a swing and we talked for hours, then back to her parent's house where we sat parked in their driveway talking for a few more hours.
It'll be 5 years married this summer, we've been together for about 7-1/2 I guess.


As far as dates go, picnics in a secluded place miles from civilizationare hard to beat. Good eats, nature, a bottle of wine, how wouldn't love bloom?

Another great first date is anything athletic. Mountain biking, ice skating, hiking, whatever. It's good to find out early if the person you are considering is lazy or doesn't have enough self-respect to keep themselves fit. I have a friend who is married to a nice enough girl, but he resents the fact that they can never do anything that he yearns for, like mountain climbing, kayaking, etc, because she can't be bothered to get herself into shape.

Hahahaha, the girl sounds like me!!! I agree that it can be important to have similar interests/habits in this department. Luckily, my husband is not into sports either (except watching football - soccer for north americans). I'm glad that he never insisted on an athletic date - I think I would have declined.

We do like to take long walks though, and I think that can be a nice first date - allows for a lot of talking.

Aww, you're being modest as usual. You like long walks, and a long walk is just a change of terrain and a backpack away from being a hike. Throw in a hill and it's mountain climbing, walk under an overpass and it becomes spelunking. You're an adventurer, you just don't know it yet.

Sorry... couldn't help myself. *chuckles* We used to sing that as a child. I can't believe your husband never went to the Efteling. *L* I LOVE it. Bill and I went back there on our honeymoon. Nothing as romantic as drifting in the gondola, with the music on the background and the flowers surrounding you.

We're planning on going back this summer for just a day, and maybe in the winter for the winteropening, though that would be the first time for me. *L*
If you haven't gone for a while, it's really worth it to go again. Some of the new things added are magnificent.

Ahum... to come back to the original topic... I would recommend a date in which you can do something and can talk. An amusement park, bowling, a boardgame evening with friends, etc. It will help both reassure you when you are stuck for conversation in the beginning, and gives you time to get the chance to know eachother better.
