  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The thing with the show and the movie too for that matter is the emphasis is on the characters and not the special effects like other sci fis (*cough* star wars *cough*). Mal Reynolds is the coolest sci fi guy ever in my mind :p

It also helps that the characters (and actors) really click.

Too often you'll watch a show and get the feeling the actors are just going through the motions, thus the characters seem weak, not so with Firefly.

I caught the film, now just need to get hold of the firefly boxset for catch up, I think it is a really strong show but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's the greatest

But when compared to the lame same old same old shows the network assembly line keeps regurgitating it stands out like a sore thumb.

Hmm, give me some examples?

It depends where you're looking nowadays for shows I think, I would consider Lost a sci fi esque show, and I don't think Serenity/Firefly is better than that.

My point exactly! Lost isn't quite like anything that's come before. Sadly most of the sci-fi series we get are just recycled from previous series.

Case in point: One of the sci-fi series that were on around the same time as Firefly that immediately pops to mind is Enterprise. The producers and writers did their best with malice aforethought to drive the Trek franchise into the ground with their convoluted story arcs. (Many of which were recycled from the equally banal Star Trek: Voyager.)

One from a LONG time ago that might have had potential was the sci-fi ER/Chicago Hope in space series Mercy Point. Problem is these sort of series aren't aimed at sci-fi fans, they're aimed at the audiences that watch the medical dramas.

This was also the case with Space Rangers (cops in space) and the lawyers of the future show whose title escapes me that lasted all of three or four episodes.

Firefly was a sci-fi show aimed at a sci-fi audience. That's what set it apart, IMHO. And it's also what sets Whedons other series apart, he's not trying to pander to mainstream sensibilities, and thus 'dumbing down' his series premise.

Hahah, I think I remember space rangers! There was their base of operations orbiting a planet? And they had these uber cool police hovercars? I think we might be thinking of the same show...but the lawyers bit I forget.

However I see what you mean, firefly is a damn good premise, it was a shame it was the difference from the other shows that was probably the reason for the TV shows demise.

As another point, does anyone remember Sliders? A show where a bunch of characters went to parallel Earth planets trying to make it home?

What you're describing sounds more like Space Precinct, not sure though as that was a UK series.

I caught one episode of the lawyers show, something about cloning, and when I went to look in the TV guide for it a few weeks later it was gone.

The series that started out with the characters going to Earth's where the Soviets occupied America and Green meant stop while Red meant go but degenerated into a sciffy farce with eyeball eating Cromags?

Nah, never heard it. ^_^

Yeah, hmm, I might try and find an episode, I used to love that show.

As for sliders, I'm not sure, I can't remember the early episodes, the one that sticks out in my mind is a fight to the death everyman for himself contest.

I generally despise most TV shows as banal claptrap—but last year I was a friend’s house and she was watching this firefly show (she had the box set) so to humor her I sat down to watch an episode—and was hooked! It’s was one of the few shows that have come out in a long time that was actually intriguing. I was so disappointed to learn that it had been cancelled. *sigh* I did get the box set and saw the movie as well.

A friend strongly suggested (read: held my brother hostage) I watch Firefly. I'll admit, I had to force myself to watch the first episode - I'm not a big fan of Westerns. But after that, I thought a second episode might be worth watching. Finishing the second episode, I was hooked. Plus, Kylie's so cute it should be illegal! :)

Then I noticed I was already 1/7 of the way through the entire series!

 KHAAAAAAAN!

A series that was far too brilliant to be grasped by the likes of Fox executives, I guess. It makes me wish I had gigantic piles of money so that I could give a bunch to Joss Whedon and say, "Here. Now you will make Firefly again."

I certainly enjoyed this series and the movie

to date.. I have watched the first half of the series three times.. and the last half twice..

I have watched serenity three times.

I personally like the characters and the interaction between them.. it seems very down to earth.. and alot like how I would imagine myself with those I know.. if we might be stuck in a ship together....

I am wondering if there are any Firefly fans around here. In my opinion the best sci fi ever created. Such a well written story and very memorable characters.

I loved Serenity! it was so awesome, creepy yet fascinating! i thought the idea of space "cowboys" w/ the western accents was really creative. and the characters were so compelling and likable. i especially liked Simon and River; that was so sweet, the brother giving up his career and risking his life to save his little sister. :) i haven't seen the show, as i don't have cable, but i definitely want to. maybe i can rent the DVDs from Netflix or something.

I'm starting to like it. I saw the movie and enoyed it and I've seen a couple of random shows from spending a number of weekends over at a fan's apartment two semesters ago. One of the better sci-fi type shows, which I'm not a huge fan of. (Although the Sci-Fi channel is one of my favorites cause of Ghosthunters. :D )

I know a few other people have mentioned Lost... and WOW is that show amazing. I have the first season on dvd and got totally addicted to it, ended up missing alot of second season cause of school work and such, but I'm really looking forward to seeing the second season on dvds and seeing the third. Scorcher505 is my boyfriend so I lent him the first season dvd's and now he's addicted to it too. ^_^

Some really awesome shows out there.. finally.
