Set the bar for all video games? Are you saying that all games in the future will be based on the shoot/reload/repeat formula? That all games will have mediocre stories and average graphics? That all games will be hyped so much by the fanboys that people buy it simply because they are told it's the best despite the fact that it isn't? If so, then the gaming industry is doomed.
How will it set the bar? Can't set the bar graphics-wise. The PS3 already has plenty of stuff either on shelves or on the way that rivals and surpasses that of Halo 3. Metal Gear Solid 4 looks on par with Halo 3, and Final Fantasy XIII surpasses it in just about every way. (No, I'm not Sony fanboy. I don't own a PS3, nor do I plan to anytime soon. I've got plenty of gripes with Sony about their strategy with the PS3, but I will admit that their graphics are incredible on many titles.)
Certainly won't set the bar storyline wise. The first two were pretty much the same: Fight the covenant, fight the flood, escape. The story of Halo 3 would have to be something amazingly intricate with plenty of twists and turns along the way and a few surprises (the Chief partnering up with that covenant guy from 2 - I forgot his name - will NOT be a surprise, nor can it even really be considered a twist since it is a repeated formula in many MANY games to have heros and villains team up to fight for the same cause). To "set the bar" the story would have to be something completely revolutionary in order to trump some of the stories of the action/adventure games and RPGs out there.
It may set a bar sales wise, but that has little bearing on the quality of the game, as so many have said already. Plenty of games out there have sold well because people bought into the hype. I've bought plenty of games in the past that were popular that I ended up selling to Funcoland or Gamestop because they were horrible. Sales don't equal quality. As far as your "bigger than any movie opening" analogy, that matters even less. You know why? Because the average movie-goer pays $10 a movie. The average gamer pays $60 for a 360 game. The 1 to 1 ratio already puts the advantage in the Xbox column. The analogy doesn't work.
And I'm not upset over a video game, but I'll admit that I get a bit irritated when someone makes accusations toward me that are entirely baseless and false while at the same time stating their own opinion as fact. I merely stated that I found Halo to be repetitive and boring back on page 2, and I get this 12 year old kid here telling me that I obviously haven't played it (when I've played through and finished both) and that if I had then I'd know it was amazing. It's like he somehow thinks I'm not entitled to my opinion. And even when he says, "This is just my opinion" he follows it up with phrases saying, "You really can't say that. . ." which basically implies that I have no right to say anything which contradicts his OPINION - and that's all that it is, despite what he says in the middle of his post on page 3 - "but Halo 3 will be the best in most ways, not just an opinion." And then he tries to impress me by listing all the games he's played (which is less than a quarter of the number I own, but I saw no reason to mention that before I decided to write this paragraph) as though it somehow makes his opinion matter more than mine because, as he said, those of us who disagree with him need to "Think next time you say LIMITED gaming experience." Then, as I tried to bring this thing to a close, he's gotta take a shot like, "I don't really care if you don't like it, my eyes are open, and Halo's not a medicore game at all." I see, so his eyes are open, which makes mine closed? Because I don't agree with his obsession? The analogy of open eyes indicates an open acceptance of truth and reality, and to insinuate that mine are closed is, again, like saying, "You're blind to the awesomeness of my beloved Halo. Maybe one day your ignorance will be washed away and your eyes will be open." It's insulting, invalidating, and most certainly uncalled for - especially when I was trying to end this debate by agreeing to disagree, and instead I get that kinda garbage from from some 12 year old child.
I'm not upset over a game. I'm upset that this arrogant kid somehow thinks his opinion is the only one that matters. He'll acknowledge that it's nothing more than his opinion, and then follow it by telling us that we don't know what we're talking about, have obviously never played the stupid games (which, again, we have) which is pretty much accusing us of lying over something so stupid just to make his obsession with the dumb game clearer. His arrogance invalidates any opinions he may have, in my eyes, because all he does is attack those of us who don't agree with baseless arguments and needless accusations.
There, I said it.
I feel better.
