Ok, I realize this has been talked about before....I'd still like to know.

What do people think of "downloading" music (also known as file sharing)?
Ok to download, but not to upload?
My personal opinion is that downloading is ok, as long as its done in moderation and only 1 or 2 songs from an artist are downloaded. Especially non-mainstream and less popular artists, who need the money from cds.

Don't worry, its not copyrighted, but rather produced by some friends of mine who wouldn't mind getting it shared.

i hate to be the technically challenged one here, but what's the difference btwn. uploading and downloading? besides that, i'd say i'd have to agree w/you. i like to sample some music to know if the cd i am about to purchase is worth it. however, i do go out and purchase the album b/c i want to support those artists; especially since a). are indie and depend on that for $$, and b). i want to own my own indie record label eventually--so i'd obviously sorta want people to buy the cd's since that's how i'll be making my $$.

Uploading is when you allow other people to access the folder or location of where you store your music/pictures/videos/ whatever. You could say there would be no downloading without uploading, as downloading is what I was referring to when I wrote "access."

This is only true in a p2p (peer to peer) enviornment. Uploading is when put files from your computer somewhere. Downloading is when you get files from somewhere and place them on your PC.

It is definately stealing if its copyrighted material.
Actually, it's legal here in Canada. You can download whatever you want and upload only one copy of something that you own. When you download a song, you are assuming that you are the only person that is receiving that song from that perticular person, because they are only allowed to have one extra copy of a song. It's kind of a confusing law. It was developed when casette recorders were becoming popular here and has been carried over to MP3s. So, it is legal to download songs from the internet in Canada. It is illegal in the USA. Uploading songs from a computer here is a grey area. You could be presecuted for it, if it is proven that you have uploaded more than one copy of a song.

Some bands such as Phish and Dave Matthews encourage file sharing.
I think downloading a few songs to see if you will buy the CD or not is fine, but you should delete them if you do not buy the cd.

What do you think about downloading music where
A. The composer is dead (like Mozart or someone)
B. The band broke up (Beatles? Pink Floyd?)

For both A. and B. I think it would be ok to download their music. After all, who's getting the money? the record company? the store? They don't really deserve the money, as it was the composer's talent that made the music possible.
I agree

Not to sound rude... but this subject has been beaten to death... do a search and Im sure you will find many threads

I agree, but it was rude anyway. If you don't want to get involved in the conversation, don't post.

That said, not all file sharing is stealing, not all is legal, and not any of it is worth saying more than that.

Somebody needs a nap. It's just as bad to waste space on a rebuke. :|

Most "file sharing" is pointless anymore. You can go to a pay site and buy pretty much any song you want for about 33 cents. I figure that it's worth the cost if I don't have to fight horrible bandwidth, corrupt or incomplete files, and valuable time in general to seek out, download, and burn a few songs that I don't feel like buying the CD for.
