  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hey! Since the thread for the NHL Playoffs has really gotten many people to come around and post, I figured a world cup one would be enjoyable too, as I'm sure many of our european folk are surely paying much attention to it.

So, what team are you going for? Which team do you actually think will win in reality (... my bet is brazil, as usual)?

Personally, I'm not sure which team I am going for. I have always liked Germany, but.. they don't have a very good team this year. I liked the way Italy played today against Ghana, so, Italy may be my choice for this year. They have a good chance, their groups is rather difficult. Next saturday's game will be the best too, Italy vs. USA, how awesome!

To the glory of God,

Randy

eya, i'm not european, and i'm following the world cup, cos australia's in it. we had a stunning 3-1 win over Japan last night (our time). Japan led 1-0 from the 26th to the 84th minute, then our master-coach Guus Hiddink sent on Tim Cahill & John Aloisi, and, lo and behold, by the 90th minute we led 3-1 with twin strikes from Cahill and a goal from Aloisi set up by Cahill. guess who was man of the match? ;)

During the '02 world cup I was working at a construction site where alot of the subs were Mexican. They were listening to Spanish radio and getting all excited, and one guy that was Costa Rican came over and told us they were gloating about Mexico scoring against the USA team, and he hoped we weren't offended. I told him it was OK, we weren't much into lady's sports anyway. He got a huge kick out of that and went and told the Mexicans, who got real quiet and seemed a little touchy afterward. ^_^

Anytime you wish to have your assertion that it is a ladies game tested I'll be happy to help you out. I may not be as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I always was.

Oh, I know. Used to play myself when I was growing up in Thailand, but they seemed so smug, and the stereotype is that we uncivilized yankee brutes can't understand it anyway, so I couldn't resist. It did quiet them down, which was the aim of the exercise.

Of course, when compared to REAL football, it is a tad girlish, eh? (couldn't resist that, either) GO LUXEMBOURG!

I somehow doubt that many "real" football players could make it through 90 minutes of futbol. Its not like you can be in a few plays and run over to the sideline for a nice oxygen treatment.

How many players on a soccer team? All of them run full tilt for 90 minutes straight? I don't remember that. I do remember alot of back and forth dribbling, some running, some trotting, some walking. Maybe I was was on a bad team. But I would like to see Beckett take a full-on tackle from an NFL linebacker while catching a pass. Then he may really have to bend something.

I can tell you as a lifetime sports player fanatic, having played all of the major US sports except hockey (admitedly, some quite badly) they all had their particular things which make it hard for other players to transition. But, let's face it, brute strength really isn't the measure of atheletic ability. It is the measure of raw strength. I guess if your metric of manliness is the ability to project brute force over a playing area, then almost none of the sports played in America are "manly."

Oh, I'm not offended, nor was I attempting to get into it. I just thought it was friendly banter. Everyone has their favorite sport(s). I actually played a little Football and I still follow the game quite a bit. I like the game. I even play fantasy football every year. Much easier to watch than tennis.

Let's face it, the stereotypes are out there:

Soccer - drama queens.
Baseball - noids.
Football - convicts. (and I'm a Cowboy's fan - )

Truth be know, the most physically demanding sport in America (according to "experts") is jockey.

England !!!!

Sorry cygnus, but so far, by the looks of things, england seems to be having trouble scoring, considering the fact that they rely on their opposition to score on their own net :D^_^

Hmmm...Interesting stereotypes. . .I don't play soccer, but everyone calls me a drama queen! Baseball? Boring, unless you're actually at the game in person. Woody, you're a. . .a. . .uh. . .a. . .COWBOY'S fan?!?!? Now, since I've become sabbaterian, I haven't watched much football. But, before that, my grandfather, father, and uncles had me well trained to be the biggest, loudest, most faithful football fan ever found. . .one of the first things that they taught me was that it was completely tabo to, under any circumstance, root for the Cowboys. If I had, I would probably have gotten myself kicked out! But, I've had my share of screaming myself hoarse at the TV. Hmm, now, betcha all didn't realize I was so competitive!

I cannot tell you all how nice it is to have internet again! It was out for three and a half days! I felt so disconnected!

Yeah, just ask the Arabs what a win would have probably done for them. Or just ask Germany what it felt like to advance to the round of 16 on an extra time goal at the end of the match.

Or the Americans, who, since 1990 (they have been in every single cup tournament from 1990 on) have only managed 3 wins in all cups combined. It is time to have a beer yet? I'm starting to feel like a Cubbies fan.

Then, again, goal differential might be important after all. Just ask Ecuador, who now only needs a tie with the Germans to win their group. (Of course, a win is a win and Germany 1-0 Ecuador would still give it to Germany - but we won't think about that.)

BTW, how would England like a shot at Germany in the round of 16?
