If theres one thing about christians is I wish many would stop treating the word fetish like its a sinful bad thing. Because odds are we ALL have some sort of fetish. Example maybe you get turned on by your wife dressing up in lingerie. Or maybe your wife gets turned on by taking a shower with you. Or maybe wearing a tool belt (lol). WHo knows. We all have turns on.
Which speaking of I also don't understand why christians don't like BDSM. I mean yes there are extremes in it, but we all again have things we like to do, or have done to us. So to say BDSM is wrong is like saying eating is wrong.
I'd wager Christians mostly have a problem with the sadism aspect of BDSM. The idea that a guy or a girl would get pleasure, especially sexual pleasure out suffering probably irks them in the wrong way. It's understandable, even as an atheist I sometimes am disgusted with myself and others who are into sadism. Ironically, these feelings have become worse when I stopped being a Christian. I know some people who developed drinking problems because of it.
Of course it helps to brainstorm about what sadism is, and what it can be. Some forms of sadism can actually be nurturing. For example some sadists devleop loving feelings for women who are broken and sick. Instead of wanting to cause them more harm, they feel a need to take care of them.
I actually have a theory that we evolved to feel a special kind of love for those who are hurt and broken so we'd have more of an incentive to take care of them. For some people, these feelings were turned up 10x and they would be what you typically considered as sadists. Over time, these people discovered they could simply hurt other people to get the same effect.
Once that happened, the context changed.
Just a personal theory I have.
I also believe there are many different variants of sadomasochism. Some of them lead down bad roads, while others are more harmless, even when intense.
Fortunately I think most of my S/M is from a more harmless variant. A woman who is in pain mainly registers love for me. I feel they are exalted in some form, almost holy like. It's pretty much the same reason I idealized martyrs when I was a Christian.
I do think there are some aggressive forms of sadism around. Ones that can lead to trouble. While I was a sadist as a kid, I wasn't interested in torturing animals (some of my friends did, and I found that really disturbing) I was mainly into spiritual and loving aspects of it.
