I've got a family of possums living in the geraniums. Last time possums were that close, I was in college and I remember being woken up by crunching. I go out to see what was going on, and there was a BIG possum snacking on the snails in the yard.
The possum kept the yard cleared of obnoxious things like that and my plants were healthy. Both good things for me. But I relate to the animals ruining plants too. A couple cats in the neighborhood insist on sleeping on other plants which don't take kindly to handling, so they're not doing well.
I hope your varmint problem gets cleared up quickly.
