  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I have a bet 7, I'm still fiddling to see if I can make it XHTML complaint.
Most of it is from what I've played with. Don't waste your time, all of it will be in the final release. ;)

As for phpBB, it is free, but not that best. It's administration lacks big time in features. I used to use it. vB is worth every penny.

This is phpBB's doc type:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">

Which is not XHTML, so it's not complaint.

I designed my church's web site (http://www.emmanuelbaptistonline.org) but I really don't have much knowledge...I never took classes or anything but thank God, the site looks decent...like someone said, it takes a lot of trial and error.
I worked with some html a while ago but it was very basic. I like to mess arround with graphics and stuff...
By the way, I use Adobe Go Live for my church's web site; this is a great program.

God Bless

Yeah, I'm not fond of phpbb, I use VB for most of my forums

www.ttac.net
www.hr3rdgen.org
www.hrpe.net

vB 2 wasn't very standard, a lot of sites look screwy in things like Mozilla & Opera. I can't even view this website in Opera 7 without it crashing it.

I'm not sure how complaint vb3 will be to any of the W3C standards. Guess we will see when its final. Right now I'm running vb3 beta 7 on my sites.

Doesn't mean that it is complaint though.

Run the pages against this to see if they truely are.

what types of classes do you suggest i take if i want to get into this?

my local community college offers many different web language classes. which one to choose?

It depends what you want to do with respect to web design/development.

To start, see if there's a basic web design course that covers HTML, JavaScript, and CSS.

If you want to actually do the visual design aspect of web sites, then look at taking some graphics design classes, as well as courses on Flash and animation. If you want to get into the code aspect of it, go for classes on ASP, PHP, Java, ColdFusion, and database design.

And if you plan to produce web sites on your own, I'd also recommend taking courses in marketing and advertising.

Hi, in answer to your question of who's in IT, I've been pushing bits and bytes around since 1971 (I was a senior in High School...the computer I used in that class in now in the Smithsonian Institution, I saw it...scary).

It would take too long to list everything I've done, but don't take that as pride talking, because the main thing I have been lacking for all these years is any kind of career sense. I'm always getting paid well to maintain some ancient system (most of my work is IBM mainframe related) and so here I am at age 50 with all obsolete skills.

But what I do at home for fun is Delphi, VB, VB.Net, some WinCE programming for the PocketPC, designing my own Web page (it still looks awful but I'm learning) and lately I've been learning Linux (which I gather you all know already).

OK, that's enough to introduce myself. Feel free to PM me if you want to chat.

God bless.

that thing's crazy. even dreamweaver pages can't get past it.
Its not crazy, its STANDARD.

And the truth is, Dreamweaver doesn't write in perfect standard either.

This is the global problem. STANDARD COMPLAINCE. You have to many people designing websites for windows IE only based systems at 1024x786.

Ever wonder why some things look funky in Mozilla and Opera and other browsers but in IE they always seem fine.

oh and by the way, does anyone know where a programming newbie like me can learn PHP?? freely??

I always check Webmonkey for tutorials on web languages. Sure enough, they've got some for PHP: http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/programming/php/

Also, check the out PHP manual. It's an excellent reference for the language that pretty much negates buying a book on it.

The Dev's over at vB.com already stated that the final theme for vB3 will be 100% XHTML compliant. :D

Until someone that doesn't know much about standards customizes their board.

Please, people, make your websites standards compliant!

Go further and make sure they look good as text only. If it doesn't look good as text only, you are not presenting the information in an elegant or efficient manner.

Please, oh mighty web designers, see www.anybrowser.org/campaign/abdesign.html . Your design isn't worth anything if we can't see it! Make your sites degrade gracefully or people won't bother.

I have a question for you guys... Several of you have said that you do freelance web design. Where do you find these jobs?! I have done a couple freelance projects but am now a starving artist. I'm a web designer and a writer...bad combination as right now neither one of those are making me any $$$.

Word of mouth and shameless self promotion.

Otherwise I have a full time job that doesn't involve web design, I'm a video engineer.
