  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Yeah...word of mouth hasn't been flowing too much lately, and right now (especially living in a new place) I'm not sure who to promote myself to...

In this new city, I have had a terrible time trying to find a full-time job. If I'm lucky, I may get offered a position doing VB (not exactly my life's dream :o). But if that's all I can get....

I have a question for you guys... Several of you have said that you do freelance web design. Where do you find these jobs?! I have done a couple freelance projects but am now a starving artist. I'm a web designer and a writer...bad combination as right now neither one of those are making me any $$$.

Postings on job boards, newsgroups, etc, and word-of-mouth.

You could always try to get yourself some word-of-mouth/contacts by doing volunteer web sites for charitable organizations. Not to mention additional entries for your portfolio. Do you have a web site where you can showcase your work?

Yeah, I've got my own website here. I'm not necessarily that great of a designer though. I keep things pretty plain and don't have a ton of experience under my belt. (Most of the sites I have available to show on my site were designed when I was starting out.) Maybe I should just stick to my day job. (which is...? writing I guess!)

Not a bad website Amy, looks a little weird in Mozilla firebird.

Anyhow. Just hang tough, I go months without work. And sometimes creating fake bogus sites works too. Why do you think I run two of my own car forums. To show off my work.

It got me the forum for the Tidewater Trans Am club and a year long contract and it just got me one with two other car clubs.

And I have a business assocate who wants me to produce a webpage.

Oh...ew. I just opened my site in Firebird (it's my husband's browser of choice, so of course it's on my computer :)). It looks worse there than I remembered when I first designed it. I used to be very gung-ho about being "viewable in any browser," but I've lost my zeal.

Running a forum of my own (or some other such site) is an interesting idea. Also, my husband reminded me that he has a contact who is potentially interested in me doing an ASP site for him. So maybe I was getting all worked up over nothing. ;)

I'm a first year MSc Bionformatics student -- with plans to go into the pharmaceuticals industry. The course involves programming in Perl, Java, and C shell, as well as a bit of web development, and some Biochemistry.

I design webpages as hobby, for example the christiananime.net forums. Running a forum is really good fun, and very rewarding. I've learned PHP and SQL too, just for fun, which has allowed me to write a few "hacks" for my forum, such as the "recent posts" box that you see on the front page.

Lots of good web designers here! :)

I love webmonkey and webpagesthatsuck! Both great resources. May I add one more that I didn't see posted here? Jakob Nielsen's web site. (Okay, I'm too new to post a link. But it's one of those www sites with useit in the middle and .com at the end. ;) ) Nielsen is the guru of usability, a feature too often overlooked in design.

I work with a small team (4 of us) doing web site design, creation, and management for a government department. My title is Web Writer, and I write and post a lot of content, do the admin maintenance stuff on our Internet and intranet, and serve as the support person for about 20 or so other people in the department who are responsible for content. And I do a LOT of QA. :D I'm the middle person who talks to the users of the programs and sites we create, and to the programmers. If they talk to each other, they both get frustrated because their perspectives and mindsets are so different. So they each talk to me, and then I go "translate" for the other group. :D

Katelyn, the thing my bosses appreciate most about my skills is that I can understand both the technical and non-technical aspects of web design. If you write well and understand web design and use, there really is a future for you! Have you thought about technical writing? That's my background. Learn everything you can about usability and what makes for good design from the end-user's perspective. Honestly, in a tight job market, I have people trying to steal me away from my current job. I got my job through monster.com, by the way. Late one night, in a fit of frustration, I typed in the word "writer," and up popped the job I've had for over three years. Don't be discouraged. Good writing skills will get you a job.

Hi,

I guess I am bit late on this thread, I've only just found christianforums.com :)
I'm a Developer/ System Admin and general Unix/Linux guru.
I live in the UK. Unfortunately my work situation is not too good right now but I have faith that God is going to bring something good out of it all.

I am largely a Perl developer and am currently involved in trying to get an online Game Server Hosting company off the ground with a friend of mine (not a Christian).

What languages do people out there prefer to work with when doing web development. PHP seems to have become very big recently. Any thoughts?

well yes, PHP does seem to be the really big one at the moment...all the good forums (IMO, VB, PHPBB and Invision Powerboard) are written in it.....as far as I can see there are very little limits as to what you can do with it....which is exactly why I'm trying to learn it right now...

PHP has been big for a long time, nothing new. Saddly it does have its limits, which is why you see a lot of corp. style and e-commerance websites written in asp or jsp VS. php.

But php seems excellent for the middleground users.

Hi,

Yes your right of course, I have been doing a little work with it but it just isn't as flexible as something Perl of Java.
I prefer Perl simply because it is a well establish cross-platform language which is the next best thing to working in C++ itself. Only it's more secure for CGI apps than C ++ is. Java on the other hand requires quite a lot of ground work to develop in properly and frankly, the more I use it the less I like it. It's a pure OO language and thus won't let me bend the rules for a neater solution :)
What languages do people out there use then?

Hey everyone, I'm a little new here. Just wondering who else is in the IT field?

My minor is CIS (computer information systems), CS being my major. Still a long time off for any degree at my rate. One of my CIS classes was desktop support certification and I’ve done a lot of side jobs doing that. I’ve also provided a lot of in-home hands on training for new users.

As for web stuff I do a little of everything. I’ve done webpage design but don’t really do that much any longer. I don’t really care for HTML but I do like PHP a lot. I’ve set up and managed forums like this but mainly for some small gaming communities that I’m really not involved with anymore.

I learned Basic and assembly language a long time ago, and picked up C some years back. Currently I’m slaving over C++ and maybe I’ll get to take a class or two next year too. I’m also slaving over some UNIX/Linux administration books among other studies.

Main source of income for the past six years has been at a telecommunications company. Mainly I program computer operated manufacturing machines that look sorta like big mech warriors. These machines are also used by GM and Intel and sure do cost a lot of clams. I’m not there for much longer though, moving out and up pretty soon.
