hotmetal said:I think the fear of the lord is slightly different. its not "Oh god i fear you in case you strike me down with a lightning bolt" its more like a "Oh God I fear falling out of a relationship with you if I sin"... My kind of view is that god is slow to anger and rich in mercy... you'd have to really *cough* him off for a punishment.
Anyways, thats how i see the fear of the lord and apply it in my life, its not nexessarily a universal thing.

fear is only for those who do not submit , who resist Him
1Jo 4:17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
1Jo 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

2 Corinthians 5:11
11 Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.
Phililipians 2:12
12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
(Please note that the Greek in both is phobios from which we derive phobia -- which is a lot more than respect.
