I didn't see it mentionned in the thread...

Ship of fools, the magazine of Christian unrest specializing in humor, satire, and popular theology. Includes news, rant of the month, religious goods, and blunders...

http://www.ship-of-fools.com/

Ship of Fools also has "The Mystery Worshiper" who comes to your congregation unannounced, and writes up a review of the liturgy on the website. You always know when a "Mystery Worshiper" has been to your church, because they leave a little laminated card in the collection plate to that affect.

The reviews are pretty cool - because they all follow the exact same formula, asking the exact same questions - so it's pretty fair.

Alwasy an interesting choice.

A pretty good read

Pagels

The Gnostic Gospels was OK. I can take or leave the rest of her writings.

Armstrong

A History of God was pretty good.

Crossan

He argues like a steamroller--big and slow and crushing. I find him to be worth the effot, but I think a lot of others will give up because he can be very dry.

Borg

Sort of Crossan lite. A much easier read.

Walsh(caution - he takes 400 pages when it should only take 100)

Unless you are willing to spend forty years in the wilderness, I would avoid Burton Mack. He is dry as dust. I've tried to read A Myth of Innocence about five times and can't get through it. And this is from a guy who read The Cross That Spoke on the beach on a vacation!
