Favorite Icons

Since Iconography is part of Holy Tradition and plays such an important part in the life of an Orthodox Christian, I thought it might be interesting to post pics of our favorite icons and perhaps a quick blurb about them.

This is a Diptych that I picked up in the bookstore of St. John Maximovich in Atlanta as a catechumen. I can't read much on the front or rear of the icon though from what I can sorta decipher is the Jesus prayer on the rear. I also found the identical, but larger icon of our Lord at a cool little Russian shop in St. Louis last winter.

Here is an interesting icon...I can't say it's my "favorite" because when I first saw it, honestly, it kind of made me shudder.

This is my favorite Ikon of Our Lord. It is found in the Monastery of St Cathrine on Mt Sinai.

A couple of years back, I worked the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City booth. We were handing out information on Catholic Charities, promoting adoption services, providing information on help with pregnancies, etc etc.

A little ways away was a booth set up by the Orthodox Churches in Oklahoma City. I spent some time speaking with them. They had these lovely icons there and I was able to obtain one. Here is a scan of it. I believe it is the Pantocrator.

PS: The image is a bit small, I'll need to find the larger version somewhere on my computer.

PSS: I have another beautiful icon that I have in my bedroom of the Trinity, I need to get it and scan it in. Perhaps someone here will have seen it before and can tell me the name of it.

To make a post with a remote image, first you must download that image to you PC with a right click on the image in question.

Then while doing a Reply post (not a Quick Reply), click on the Manage Attachments below the text box (this brings up a popup file selector window), browse and select the image you just downloaded to your PC. Select Add this File and then All Done. Finally, post your message.

P.S. I just returned from a chanter's workshop with Vlad.
Archimandrite Benjamin gave a great talk on the missions in Alaska. The Orthodox still face much persecution.

From The Manual of Divine Services by Archpriest Sakolof

When giving the blessing they compose the fingers of the right hand in such a manner as to form the name of Jesus Christ in Greek. To accomplish this, the index is stretched out straight and the middle finger slightly bent, thus representing the letters “IC”; then the annular is bent, the thumb is laid across it, and the little finger is slightly inclined,
forming the letters “XC.”
