I remember Appendix D in the original D&D Dungeonmasters Guide - the d100 encounter table for Ladies of the Night!

However these dyas I play 3.5 mainly. I only play one D&D game a week now though, I play mainly other rpgs - Cthulhu (which I have written supplements for), Unknown Armies, Ars Magica and other stuff.

Third edition as being the least flawed of the bunch. I do however believe that it still contains too many of the old anachronisms from the dark ages of roleplaying, prime among which being the totally unrealistic and restrictive level-based experience system.
Oh yes, and if I met the man behind the open sourcing of the D20 system in the street, I would shoot him. Well maybe not shoot him, but possibly heckle him, criticise him, and inquire as to how he can live with himself/sleep at night.

It's o.k. Gary, he didn't mean it! D&D is still cool!

great pics bo,

I think those two photo's prove D&D is not satanic. Look at those guys! Did anyone catch GG's cameo on Futurama. He would roll dice to decide what to do/say. Funnay!
Yeah! Did you see the 1e Monster Manual he had, too?

Has anyone here played the Basic->Expert set D&D?
Yes. Wasn't that a shameless way to make money? (Oops! Looks like you've got past level 3. Guess it's time to buy the next book!)

As for the original question, I have the fondest memories of the 2nd Edition system, though it's certainly not due to any simplicity or intuitiveness of the design. Probably just because when I played 2nd edition I had very little experience with other RPGs, and thus had not begun to abhor the war-games aspects of the character system, and the general hack and slash combat obsession that the game had.
