The banjo is usually associated with country and bluegrass music. But it sometimes is used in more creative ways in other genres.

What is your favorite banjo song, either in or out of the country and bluegrass styles? Here are 2 of mine.

Stephen Stills - Know You Got to Run (Piedmont Blues)

John Michael Talbot - The Coming (minor key bluegrass)

There was a song that came to my mind. Black Soul Choir by 16 Horsepower. I was thinking of posting the video, but someone beat me to it. Great song. Sounds great on the stereo with some good volume.

First time hearing that John Michael Talbot piece. I like it. Quality material.

I think JMT was like 14 years old when he went on the road as banjo player with his brother Terry's country rock band Mason Prophet. (kind of a 60s version of the early Eagles)

Is that even a question?
Foggy Mountain Breakdown

Ah the true classic! Love it! That tune is probably the main reason I started liking Bluegrass.

Another of my favorites:
I actually played this one with my wife's uncle on fiddle and me on guitar (no banjo sadly) at his farm in KY back years ago. Nothing like playing bluegrass in the hills of Kentucky.

BTW - here is a real stand up guy from Gleason TN. (my in-laws home town) Used to be on Hee Haw and the youngest person ever inducted into the Grand ole Opry. Mike Snyder. He is also my wife's 2nd cousin. (or something like that)

I first saw him on Dolly Parton's tv show; and asked my wife if she knew him. She did not, but phoned her mom who told her "That's your Aunt So-and-So's boy."

I'm in KY. I didn't realize geographic location made a difference with that. Apparently, my priest (a native of Boston) recently got a banjo and is trying to learn to play. Maybe there's something to it.

Someone probably already posted it but Dueling Banjos is great. The link I posted was from Deliverance and some of the language was coarse so I deleted it.

You wouldn't think it, but Baroque music transfers to the banjo pretty well. After all, a harpsichord is an instrument that plucks strings. Anything you could play on that, could be played on a banjo.
