  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What about the tone of the OP? He threw a Bible verse at them and said "How do you justify your way around this?" He didn't say "It appears that one of your practices is un-Biblical." or "When did the practice arise of calling a man "Father" and what's the Biblical support for it?" If any post in this thread could be taken as rude, I would say it's the one that implies that the Catholic Church is disregarding the Bible and "justifying their way around it." Several posters refuted his argument by putting the verse back into context (context is good) and proving that nobody has ever taken that paragraph to mean the words "teacher" and "leader" should be removed from our vocabulary. So, why "father"?

Personally, I don't like the term "Bible believing Christian" because it implies that other Christians don't believe in the Bible. This, coupled with the implication of the OP that Catholics are justifying their way around the Bible seems a little judgemental.

Think about it for a minute. The Church existed for hundreds of years before the Bible. They are the ones that compiled the Bible. If there were things in the Bible that contradicted what the Church was teaching, they could have just left those books out (like the Reformers) or changed them (like Martin Luther.)

Oh please... go and re read the OP before you throw stones. “How do we justify our way around" as if we are so unbiblical and underhanded and purposely find ways around the bible.

You know he could have just asked, why do we call priests ‘father’ wen Jesus said not to call any man our father? His question was a not so subtle insinuation that we are wrong, that he was just trying to ‘preach’ to us how wrong we are and not really interested in our answer, because he IMO was not really asking a question, but making a statement under the guise of a question. IOW, he, IMO was just trying to get around the forum rules. If I am wrong I apologize to him in advance but this is how the OP seemed to me and why he never came back to the thread. I believe we call that “trolling.”

It was a drive-by posting. :)

Throw out an accusation, then sit back and watch the fun.

I just want to know one thing: if we're supposed to take Matthew 23:9 literally, are we supposed to take Ezekiel 23:20 literally, too?

 That would smart!

I pray that Rebirth in Flames discovers the beauty of the holy, apostolic and original Church, the Holy Catholic Church.

Kyrie Eleison!

He has expressed sincere interest towards Catholicism. What is so special is his screen name "Rebirth in Flames", which is such a Catholic name. It reminds me so much of the rebirth from the 'flames' of purgatory - or the purgatorial state - which we shall all know, unless we are beatified or canonized saints of course! I almost wish I had his screen name. Rebirth in Flames, you have a great screen name! :) And keep searching, you should be very and pleasantly surprised. :)

Yea I can see it. The question is, does that justify returned hostility by numerous people that in essence put him in his place, or exceeding patients and loving correction, that as one verse in scripture puts it: "That God may lead him to a knowledge of truth"

I gotta go to work.

Have a blessed day

I think you're overlooking the people who were patient with him and you're focusing on what you think is hostility. Maybe we do get a little irriated with baited questions, but we see it alot. It's par for the course for some people to come in here with their mind already made up, ask a question which really isn't meant to be a question at all just to get our dander up.

But you're right. God probably allows that to teach us patience. :) I think I'm getting better at handling it, actually.

It's true that there was a tone to the OP as there can be tones in some of his other posts. But I know that Rebirth in Flames has been expressing interest in Catholicism. I just pray that he discovers the Treasure of the Church. :crossrc:
It probably is better to err on the side of grace. :)

Oy---don't ask!

I've been moving. Next time I'm gonna do it with five gallons of gasoline and a match.

Plus I've been working a lot of extra hours at work, and it's been a hairy season, believe me. Robberies, B&E's, assaults, threats, drug cgarges, weapons charges......

At least it's never dull.

Anyway, what with one thing and another, I haven't been on line as much lately. I only have computer access at work, because my home machine picked up a nasty hijack virus and is totally FUBAR; I can't even use it.

Hopefully I can get it fixed and set up soon. In the meantime, well, absence makes the heart grow fonder, nicht wahr? ;)

I can totally relate. I hate moving, and my husband's job is almost identical to yours. :) Your family is always in my prayers. You stay safe. I mean it.

LOL! What movie is that from? I can almost remember...ack, that drives me crazy! :D Sorry about the virus though! That bites.

Hopefully I can get it fixed and set up soon. In the meantime, well, absence makes the heart grow fonder, nicht wahr? ;)
And on the flip side, if familiarity breeds contempt, maybe I should be taking a loooooong break. :D But we do miss you. Be well, and God bless you.

Peace!

Trust me, I intend to. :)

Saving Private Ryan, although the acronym predates the movie by decades. "Fouled Up Beyond All Recognition". (Similar to SNAFU, or "Situation Normal, All Fouled Up".)

The one we used a lot in the Air Force was JAAFU, or "Joint Army-Air Force Foulup".

Sorry about the virus though! That bites.

Tell me about it.

You already took a long break---you were gone for what, two years? Don't you dare disappear on us again, yahimmy?

Peace!

Sandy

And also with you. :)
