Matthew 6:17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;

18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

We fast in our church unless we have medical reasons not to. I'm juvenile diabetic and don't fast like I used to but I have to agree-you'll feel it in your spirit.

Ask the folks over in "The Ancient Way" about fasting... they'll give you an earful! (the Orthodox fast for about 2/3 of the year).

I think fasting is a wonderful spiritual discipline. Like any discipline, it requires practice and prayer. (I saw this on the web recently: "fasting without prayer is just a diet.")

Muslims also fast quite often (during the entire month of ramadan, and many every monday and thursday). Something that gets me through the day is that everytime my tummy rumbles or when I think about food, I try to say a prayer to thank God for something. Instead of spending the entire day fixated on food, it become a day centered on praising God.

That's what I do too, Rahma. It's one of the best things about fasting, if you ask me--it brings God into the minutiae of my daily life. I'll be sitting at my desk working away, and when my stomach grumbles, I pray for strength and guidance.

:)

:D

Also remember that Jesus said "when" you fast, not "if" you fast. I believe it is a valuable spiritual tool that we should use unless we are medically unable to do so.

Hmmmm. Interesting. I haven't fasted for about 25 years... guess I'm a little overdue, huh? Not that it's the deciding factor, but what do some of the fitness gurus around here have to say about fasting from a health perspective? Say, only drinking water for 24 hours, or 40 or whatever? Thanks in advance! :)
