GR, you them by their fruits. Now that is the fruit of the Spirit.

I've heard a number of prophets, who claim such the same thing, but your Bible is the measuring and testing stick.

You are learning, so please don't get caught up with prophets. Many are false!

the bible says that hell was prepared for the devil and his angels, and people will be placed in hell following the final judgement, which is clearly after the resurrection (sheep and goats and all that). (need a whole body to be thrown into hell and until the resurrection unbelievers have not been brought out the ground)

ain't nobody in hell yet.

p.s. when the bible speaks of false prophets there are two viewpoint. 1. Old testament - people who say that God has said when he clearly has not (things that did not happen, or out of line with the rest of the scriptures) OR 2. people who do not practice what they preach (this can be gained from reading a very early christian text called 'didache' - this is the closest thing we have to knowing what the early church thought and did in practice (outside of the bible, try doing a google search)

Steve.

p.s. Suspsect this one will get alot of comeback for saying no one is there yet. (Remember the parable of Lazarus and the rich man)

Isa 8:20To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, [it is] because [there is] no light in them

If what they says doesn't line up with scripture they are a false prophet.

Mat 7:15¶Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
Mat 7:16Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

They look like sheep - so they'll look christian.

Deu 18:21And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?
Deu 18:22When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that [is] the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, [but] the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

When I hear someone say, "The Lord Said!" My spiritual antenna goes up.

But, when I hear someone say, "I believe the Lord said!" Then I will listen and then test it with Scriptures.

Many prophets in churches, are full of wind and love to hear their own voices. And many know your "heart's desires" and they will always prophecise in the general area of your desires.

Now, I have experienced a number of prophets speaking over me, and I've had a couple who spoke over me and there was no way that they could have known what they knew about me or said.

Now, when that happens I put it up on the shelf, and let it prove itself.

Now, sometimes, a prophet may hear the Holy Spirit, but at the same time they may hear through a counterfeit spirit, and the information that they spoke over you actually came from "familar spirits".

So you have to be very warry, always be aware, beware, and never be unaware.

True prophets of God always prophesy God's word. If they come predicting a future that is not scriptual then know that they are false. Deception is everywhere, especially by way of very-convincing spirits of divination.

Here is how deceptive this is: There are people who call themselves prophets that have the ability to hear spirits. Now there are those of us who have "familiar spirits" that follow us (until we shake them off by the power of God). So, when you get the prophet's "spirit of divination" around a "familiar spirit" what you have are two spirits talking to each other about you. Sensitive to the voice of his/her spirit of divination the "prophet" relays things going on in your life that they have no way of knowing about. Thus you are fasinated and, hopefully, sucked in. Which, of course, is the intent. Your eyes off God and on the mystical. It's all so deceptive and very evil.

God bless you,

The Guide

It isn't easy, is it. My detectors would be "up". Young Christians seem especially vulnerable, both to doing this (this person wasn't that long a Christian) and to spreading this.

I'm skeptical. I've no reason to believe her. Maybe there's a reason, I just don't see it. God made the world to work the way it does, and He sets apart certain teaching with miracles. He can do that, sure. But He doesn't do it just anywhere. Even in Israel people weren't running around doing miracles all the time. Special times brought out truly public miracles. The Conquest; the Prophets; the Incarnation.

I see that as a pattern.

how're we to judge? We're not clear of false prophets, who knows? maybe the pastor in the local church is one. Whatever it is, the bible is our guide.

We cant be sure, but for whatever reasons we should always refer to the bible and ask God. And sometimes books can be written by false prophets without us knowing it. It's advisable to take some books as lightreading and take up some useful points from it. One of the most obvious false prophets is the one who predicts the date of the end times. Other than that, nobody knows. God knows and He will guide you.
I haven't read Thomas Choo's book, but I do know somepeople who have been changed by her book. Sometimes it doesn't matter if you dont believe the writer, but believe God and His greatness.

i have seen people I am not sure to call them false prophets or misusing gifts but there are a lot of things they would tell people happened to just the staff and then they would also say they have an angel of purity with them that will only heal if people give their organization money. they would also draw lots for "prophecies" and there were times when i went to the one conference i went to i felt like they were being convicted by the Holy Spirit in something they said and ignoring it. The organization was Extreme Prophetic. Ironically the only prophecy i received there that really made sense to me was one given through just another person to attend, not from the organization. One that glorified God. But it did seem like some people there really worked in the Holy Spirit, but it seemed others did not.:doh:

i think this is more evidence that you have to always focus on the True Giver, not the gift. The Lord always needs to be our foundation, our center, our life.

this is going to be a bit long, because your question is not one that can be answered in 1 or 2 sentences. so i just wanted to let you know that...

well, first off, a true prophet of God does not prophesy for money... so that's a big red flag. that would sort of make God into some sort of prostitute, wouldn't it? i mean, to say that He'd give u a word if you gave Him money? so a real prophet would never ask for money in order to give you a word from the Lord. if God has truly given them a word for you, then they'll give it for free, because freely they have received so freely they ought to give. did God charge them money for the word that He's given them for you?

now, there are some prophets that are in training so they are more prone to make mistakes. and we must also remember that prophets are not infallible... only the Word is. so when God gives them a word for someone, that word must be filtered through that person's character/personality... you see what i'm saying here? it is possible even for a real prophet of God to "miss it" as they say. we often make the mistake of assuming that prophets don't ever mistakes, and that's not true. they're still human, so they are still capable of making mistakes, so we are to always check the word that they give with the Word of God. it MUST line up with the Word... if it's not in agreement with the Word then it did not come from God. The Bible says that the Word is God, so God would never contradict Himself in ANYTHING. it's just not possible. so sometimes a prophet may have heard wrong. it's not that they're a false prophet, but just that they "missed it" somewhere

now that is not to say that they are suppose to "miss it" every single time they give a word... if they're missing it all the time, then it's time for them to sit down somewhere until God really speaks to them... something wouldn't be right with that picture... God is not speaking to you ALL the time, and when you make that mistake then you end up giving false prophecies, which would give a person right to label you as a false prophet. u can't assume that everytime you open your mouth, God wants to speak into someone's life... c'mon now. God doesn't always want a prophet to speak even when He has shown them something. sometimes He reveals things just for the purpose of intercession. but that's another topic.

now there are 3 things that are supposed to be present in ALL prophecies. i always remember them because they all start with the letter "e", so maybe that would help u 2 remember so you can discern. but those 3 things are:

1. edification - does it build you up in the LORD and in the things of God?
2. exhortation - does it provoke you to get to know God and truly seek Him in spirit and in truth or does it draw you away from the Lord? if a prophetic word has come from the Lord, it will always lead you closer to the Lord
3. encouragement - does it give courage to go on in God? letting you know that God is concerned about you and that you CAN make it?

now if 1 of these 3 things are not present in the word they give you, then please do not receive it.

another way to tell, and i believe someone has already posted it, but in Deuteronomy 18: 21-22, it says that the word that comes from the Lord will come to pass. if a prophet speaks a word that does not come to pass, then that word did not come from the Lord. because His word will never come back void.

on the flip-side, there are false prophets that speak words that come to pass as well. some of them actually have the gift of prophecy, but they are not using it to glorify God. the Bible says that the gifts and callings of God are irrevocable, and we are born bearing our gifts. so when God has ordained for someone to be His prophet, they are born bearing the gift of prophecy, and God does not take back His gifts... even if they misuse them, which is the sad part. so some false prophets do have the gift of prophecy, they're just not using it to glorify God, and some of their words may actually come to pass. Nastradomas predicted things that came to pass, but he was not a prophet of God. false prophets pick up the information they have "illegally" so to speak. they pick them up in the spirit realm through demonic spirits (remember Satan is a spiritual being and so are demons), but they do so illegally via familiar spirits. i believe someone already addressed this, but a lot of false prophets operate through familiar spirits and spirits of witchcraft and divination. i must say this, FALSE PROPHETS IN NO WAY KNOW WHAT GOD KNOWS ABOUT YOU NOR DO THEY KNOW AS MUCH AS GOD KNOWS ABOUT YOU! the information that they give is information that God had already intended to reveal to the person, or they're trying to manipulate someone's destiny which is often the result. the Bible says to look to God for your future. He knows the thoughts and plans that He has for you, and they are not evil. when we go to these false prophets trying know about the future, the information that they give is only given for the purpose of manipulating your destiny... 2 get your mind psyched out so that they lead u away from the true and living God.

now there are some instances where the fulfillment of a prophecy hinges upon a response from you... that means that there's something that has to be done by you in order for that word to come to pass in your life. for instance, if someone gives you a word from God that your ministry is about to take off within the next year, and then the devil comes to attack that word and discourages you and you fall away from the faith and backslide, is it reasonable for you to assume that the word is still going to come to pass for you? of course not! now does that mean that God lied to you? no. does it mean that the prophet was a false prophet? no. why would you expect God to keep His word, when you haven't kept yours? in those cases, it does not necessarilly mean that the prophet was false, it means that you did not fulfill your part in order for that word to come to pass. in such a case, you have no right to accuse that prophet of being a false prophet. i need to also say, that whenever God speaks a word through a prophet or anybody for that matter, the devil will come to attack that word to get you to fall away from God just so that word over your life will not come to pass. in Matthew 13:21, Jesus said that tribulation or persecution comes because of the word. the enemy is after that seed. he loves to mock God, and if he attacks a word and you fall away, it gives him perfect opportunity to tell you that either the prophet lied or God lied (mocking God)... and neither would be the case in this situation.

i will give you another example. sometimes also, a prophet may speak a word of judgment or warning. they're not always telling about the nice car that God is gonna bless you with. sorry to be the one to break the news. prophets are the mouthpiece of God, so they speak what God is saying. and what God is saying may not always be pleasant to our ears. sometimes God speaks jugdment and warns us of certain things. so sometimes a prophet may speak warnings to you about a danger that may be up ahead of you. God is so gracious and merciful that He sometimes warns of Satan's traps that he has prepared for us in spite of our own actions. a trap is always hidden from the natural eye, because otherwise it wouldn't be a trap. satan is very cunning, you have to remember that. but God has given gifts to the Body and He makes us aware of Satan's devices. so that we don't fall into Satan's traps. so sometimes God may speak to a prophet and warn of something that lies up ahead. say you are driving in a car, and somebody tells you that there's a huge bump up ahead so you need to turn left in order to avoid it. now if you ignore the person, thinking that they know nothing, then guess what? you may go home with a flat tire. but if you listen and take heed to the advice and the warning that has been given, then you can make a detour and head in the right direction. sometimes prophets give words that put you back on the right path. they may warn you of something that lies up ahead. now the fulfillment of a word like that is contigent upon your response to the word, which is what i was saying earlier. if you take the detour then of course what they warned of will not happen. does that mean that they're a false prophet because that word didn't come to pass? no. it means that the Lord warned you, and you moved out of the way and avoided that situation. that happened to me a while ago. i wasn't following the Lord like i should've been, but the Lord sent a prophet to me and gave me a word and warned me of what could've happened to me had i stayed on that path. that is an excellent way that God proves His love, grace, and mercy to us even in spite of ourselves. you see how wonderful God is?

Jesus spoke prophetically to Peter when He told him that he would deny Him 3 times, so we see out Lord moving in this gift as well.

i mentioned also, that sometimes prophets speak judgment. a lot of people like to argue against these types of prophets saying that only Old Testament prophets spoke judgment, but that is so not true. most of the people that say things like that are in danger of judgment themselves. that's why they don't want to have to adhere to the words of the prophet. God gives us chances on top of chances to turn from sin and come back to Him. and sometimes if we do that, we can avoid His judgment upon our sin. isn't that what happens with salvation? unfortunately, just like with salvation, there are some who reject His words, and they wind up coming under the judgment of God. but God will always warn you beforehand, and sometimes He does that through a prophet.

now as far as this lady going to heaven or hell... if you wanna know whether or not she really went to either of those places, i don't know and probably no one knows for sure but God. but is it possible? yes it most certainly is.... let's find it in scripture:

2 Corinthians 12:1-2 (KJV)
It is doubtless not profitable for me to boast. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord: I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago -- whether in the body I do not know, or whether out of the body I do not know, God knows -- such a one was caught up to the third heaven.
(my emphasis)

now here Paul is speaking about his vision of paradise or heaven. when he says "I know a man", he is speaking of himself. then he goes on to say that he was caught up into the 3rd heaven, which is where God dwells. we commonly refer to it simply as heaven. so there is a scriptural account of someone who was taken up into heaven. but the difference here is that they didn't write a book about it and then sell it in an effort to make millions of dollars...

i don't believe that that is the goal of everyone who writes books about revelations and things that the Lord has shown them and so on... because only God really knows if their experiences were authentic or not, so you have to walk in discernment and ask the Holy Spirit to lead and guide you into all truth, because Satan is itching to guide you into deceptions and false doctrine... personally, whenever i read a book by any author, i ALWAYS pray and ask the Holy Spirit to lead and guide me into TRUTH, not error. that is His job - to be our Guide and Helper for these types of situations. so let Him lead you into truth. if a word comes from Him, He will let you know. remember the Holy Spirit is the One in the Godhead who gives administers spiritual gifts to us, so He will let you know when a person is operating in a gift given by Him or by the devil. that's why it's so important that we build our relationship not just with God the Father, not just with Jesus our Savior, but with the Holy Spirit as well, so He can be our Guide into all truth and keep us from error.

let me tell you, i'm still learning about this topic myself. and it is a very extensive topic. this is just some of the things that i have learned so far, but i will update if i find out anything else that may be of help. i hope this information has helped you a little bit more. God bless you!

PS a good book that deals with this is "The Prophet's Dictionary" by Paula A. Price. i learned a lot about this subject through that book, and it has a ton of other useful information as well. i bought mine through amazon.com, so maybe it'll help you out too. God bless!

i also want to add, that if you doubt the word that a true prophet has spoken over you, then don't expect that word to come to pass. your lack of faith has kept it from coming to pass, and that does not mean that the person was a false prophet, it means you didn't have enough faith for your word to come pass. God operates according to our faith. you can't expect Him to do more than you believe Him for. you can't expect for a word to come to pass and you just sit back with no faith in that word. you allow that seed to fall by the wayside.

2 Chronicles 20:20 (KJV)
... Believe in the Lord your God, and you shall be established; believe His prophets, and you shall prosper.
(my emphasis)

it says to believe HIS prophets, not false prophets, and you shall prosper. God bless.

i am so sorry! but i don't believe that MANY prophets are false! it is good that he wants to know about prophets, and he should want to know. avoiding the area of the prophetic certainly will not keep false prophets away! so the best thing for him to do would be to get informed on these things, so he won't get led astray by a false prophet. i'm still learning myself, and when i first got saved, people told me the same thing. to stay away from this. i don't think that's good advice, because ignorance is a doorway for Satan. he operates where there is darkness (ignorance) of a matter. and he will feed off of areas where we are uninformed, so it's good that he learns. as long as he trusts in and is led by the Holy Spirit so that he finds truth and not error. because sometimes our want for knowledge causes us to become prey for false doctrines as well. so we have to keep a balance. we need to learn these things, but we also need to be led by the Holy Spirit as He guides us into all truth. God bless you!

i promise this is the last thing i want to add... lol

i mentioned that false prophets don't know everything about you... i must mention also that true prophets don't know everything about you either. me and my sister-in-law was just discussing this very thing recently, and she was talking about how she was walking down the street and somebody had a "word" for her. i don't know. i wasn't there, but she thought that a prophet of God knew everything about her business so to speak. that's not true. only God knows all that there is to know about you. what prophets know, they know because God has shown it to them. He is the Source of the information, and He doesn't reveal your "secrets" to them to embarass you or anything like that. like i said earlier, God gives prophetic words for the purposes of edification, exhortation, and encouragement. NEVER for embarassment. i know that begins with an "e" too, but it's not part of the 3 e's... lol

1 Corinthians 13:9 (KJV)
For we know in part and we prophesy in part.

prophets only know part of the picture. God has your whole picture, and He knows everything that there is to know about you. so prophets prophesy in part, because they know in part. that's why a true prophetic word from God is always supposed to provoke you to seek the Lord for more information about your circumstances. the word came from Him, and must be taken back to Him for clarity. God bless!

"Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'" - Matthew 7:15-23

Look carefully at people's lives. If they have a record of dishonesty, multiple marriages, changed names, jail sentences, etc they are probably scam artists instead of prophets. If someone is easily angered by a test, I would watch out too - since the same Holy Spirit that would be prompting you to test someone will be living in the prophet - if that prophet is a prophet at all. Compare their behavior to the fruits of the sinful nature and the fruits of the Spirit:

"The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. " - Galatians 5:19-24

Now, we are all developing creatures and fall short from time to time, but if someone has a lifestyle that is marked by a lot of sinful behavior, you should definitely question whether they are really prophets. These are backsliding Christians at best, whose behavior prevents them from being worthy to teach. At worse, they are wolves in sheep's clothing.

Finally:

"If anyone does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name, I myself will call him to account. But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded him to say, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, must be put to death. You may say to yourselves, 'How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the LORD ?' If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the LORD does not take place or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously. Do not be afraid of him." - Deuteronomy 18:19-22

Now, these are New Testament times and we don't put false prophets to death, but if someone prophesies that Jesus will come back on August 18, 2009 and He does not come back, then that person is not a true prophet of God. For further reading on this, you definitely want to check out Matthew 24.

i know what the Bible says, but I do think that sometimes a person might be selfish or angry, but other times exhibit fruits of the Spirit because we are still in these bodies continuously needing to fight the good fight for the Lord and we can because we have Jesus. I am not a perfect man. I have made mistakes and sometimes lost my focus on the Lord. But sometimes when my focus is on the Lord He has spoken through me to edify others. I think it is certainly a fact that sometimes we are better examples of Christians than other times. But I do know for a fact God uses us. If a person only goes by those verse in Galatians, they will not see that we also have struggles. Some may say "oh that person is depressed, sometimes angry and jealous and sometimes they aren't focusing on God, so that means they are from Satan or serving Satan and are false prophets and not real Christians."

That is not true though.

i believe that God wants to free us from all habitual sins that we commit on a daily basis just out of habit. no we will never be "perfect" (assuming that your definition of perfect is to never ever make another mistake or sin). but there are certain sins in our lives that are bigger than just mistakes. they have become bondages in our lives. these are habitual sins. those are the sins that God desires to free us from. there is a difference between a mistake and a habitual sin. a mistake is something you learn from and if you get it the 1st time, then you usually don't have to learn the same lessons twice. a habitual sin is something that has you in total bondage and is preventing you from progressing in the things of God. it is a hinderance to your walk with God. that is why He must remove it in order to take you where He's taking you. i believe that the power that is in the Word of God is the power to call you out of darkness and keep you out of darkness... in other words, you don't go back to it. as long as you walk according to the Spirit, then He can put you in a place where you never touch these sins again. now that does not mean that you become "perfect." i believe that the perfection that we attain is a state of moral perfection, not literally being perfect in all that we do. in Galatians, i believe that it is referring to those who commit those sins habitually - on a regular, routine basis with no intentions of stopping and making no effort to stop. now if you're struggling as long as you keep coming to God and are allowing Him to complete His work of sanctification in you, then that's a different story. God will never give up on you, and if you trust in that then He'll do just what He said He'll do. don't ever think that you can't get free from habitual sins. just because they've been there a long time, does not mean that God does not have enough power to remove them. in my walk with God, i have watched Him move certain things out of my life and He still is in the process of doing this. of course, i'm not perfect and would be the last one to claim such a thing. but i'm trusting in Him to complete the work that He has begun in me. He who has begun a good work in you WILL see it through unto completion. that is His Word. and that is what we hold on to.

what about in relation to prophets? the purging process that prophets go through is very intense. their assignment alone brings them under a higher standard of expectations. speaking of teachers, the Bible says that they will be held to a stricter judgment, so compare that to a prophet and what do you get? an even stricter judgment in my opinion. so because of this, God takes them through an intense process of preparation where it cleanses out such impurities. does that mean that they are perfect? of course not. i once heard a preacher say something that really blessed me. he said that God will use you while you are not perfect as long as you keep coming to Him... that did wonders for my spirit. God knows we can't achieve that kind of perfection on our own. so His grace enables us to come to the place where He deems us to be fit for His use. isn't that a blessing? God IS good.

Be blessed!

I agree with what the others have written... when I encounter a prophet, there are three questions:

what are their 'fruits'?
do they draw people closer to God, or glorify themselves?
are they doing this for money?
and importantly, pray about them. Trust God that He would let you know if they are a true or false prophet.

God bless!
